Combine harvesters are machines that combine the tasks of harvesting, threshing, and cleaning of grain crops under different environmental conditions. In order to cope with these varying soil, climate and crop conditions, it is important to adjust and to optimize the internal settings of these machines on-the-go in the field. Up till now, these tasks are performed by the combine driver but the autonomous tuning of the different subprocesses on a combine harvester would lighten the job of the operator and increase the machine performance. The main objective of this thesis is the identification and control of the cleaning process on a combine harvester.Data driven techniques are developed in this thesis to monitor, analyze and control the multivariate, non-linear time-varying cleaning process on a combine harvester. In a first part of this thesis, an evolutionary input selection methodology is proposed to select the key input variables for identification of the multivariate cleaning process. By means of an optimization technique, inspired by the natural laws of genetic biology, the optimal set of key input variables is selected out of the large pool of potential inputs. It was found that the sieve losses and the material other than grain (MOG) content in the grain bin are non-linearly correlated with the aeration level of the cleaning shoe. Other potential key input variables for prediction of the MOG content in the grain bin and the sieve loss level are the lower and upper sieve opening respectively. In the subsequent chapter, the selected variables are used to develop a non-linear fuzzy Takagi-Sugeno model for prediction of the MOG content in the grain bin and the sieve losses. Fuzzy modeling techniques are well known for identification of non-linear processes because these techniques decompose the complex system behavior into local linear models which are easier to interprete. Consequently, the emphasis of the identification study is on the physical interpretation of the cleaning process and the gain of process knowledge which could be valuable for process control purposes. The fuzzy control methodology is proposed in this thesis as the ideal control framework since human and deductive knowledge are of importance in the design of the control system. Fuzzy control techniques In dit doctoraatswerk wordt een eerste stap gezet naar de ontwikkeling van een autonome oogstmachine. Oogstmachines worden wereldwijd ingezet om verscheidene gewassen, zoals oa. tarwe, gerst, koolzaad en maïs, te oogsten bij sterk wisselende omgevingscondities. Om deze fluctuaties in grond-, klimaat- en gewascondities op te vangen is het noodzakelijk om continu de instellingen van de machine aan te passen tijdens het oogstproces. Tot op heden worden de machine-instelligen continu bijgestuurd door de bestuurder maar automatisatie van deze opdracht zou de werkdruk van de bestuurder sterk kunnen doen dalen in de toekomst en bovenal zorgen voor een meer optimale machinewerking. De belangrijkste doelstelling van dit doctoraatswerk is dan ook i) het identificeren en fysisch interpreteren van het reinigingsproces bij oogstmachines en ii) het ontwikkelen van een controle systeem dat autonoom de instellingen van het reinigingsproces aanpast indien dit noodzakelijk geacht wordt. Het reinigingsproces kan omschreven worden als een complex proces omwille van zijn multivariaat, niet-lineair en tijdsafhankelijk gedrag. Deze eigenschappen vormden dan ook de grootste uitdaging in dit werk. In een eerste luik van deze thesis wordt beschreven hoe een selectie kan gemaakt worden van de verscheidene invloedsfactoren op de werking van het reinigingsproces. Zo is er gebruik gemaakt van genetische algoritmen om de belangrijkste invloedsfactoren te selecteren en ze vervolgens te weerhouden voor identificatie van het reinigingsproces. Fuzzy modelleringstechnieken werden gehanteerd als identificatietechniek aangezien ze het gehele proces beter fysisch interpreteerbaar maken door het niet-lineaire proces op te splitsen in lineaire deelregimes. De nadruk in dit deel wordt bijgevolg gelegd op het fysisch interpreteren van het reinigingsproces. In een tweede luik van het proefschrift werd een fuzzy controlesysteem voor het reinigingsproces ontwikkeld en positief geëvalueerd tijdens veldexperimenten in het zomerseizoen. Een fuzzy controlemethodologie werd in deze studie dan ook geselecteerd als zijnde de meest geschikte controletechniek voor deze toepassing aangezien zowel van de heuristische kennis van ervaren operatoren als van de deductieve datagebaseerde kennis, die vergaard werd in deel 1, gebruik kan worden gemaakt bij het ontwerp van dergelijke controlesystemen. Veelbelovende resultaten toonden de meerwaarde aan van een autonome controle van het reinigingsproces vooral bij sterk wisselende omgevingsinvloeden.
