Abstract

Abstract

Treatment of abdominal cancers is a complex and dynamic area of oncology, and radiation therapy is playing an increasingly prominent role. The purpose of this book is to provide a step-by-step guide to image-guided radiation treatment (IGRT) for abdominal cancers. The book not only provides information for radiation oncologists and medical physicists on the evidence that broadly drives our practice, but also discusses practical details that arise in the day-to-day management. Finally, the authors also address the shortcomings of our present-day knowledge and look forward to future directions. This text is divided into four broad categories: an overview of IGRT on abdominal cancers; principles of IGRT for abdominal cancer; practice of IGRT for abdominal cancer; advances in IGRT for abdominal cancers. As such, the book not only covers the fundamental knowledge required to implement the IGRT techniques in abdominal cancer treatment with detailed operational procedures involved, but also provides an overview of emerging techniques for future application. Part of IPEM-IOP Series in Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Biology.

Abstract

This monograph summarizes state of the art knowledge regarding peritoneal surface malignancies, with in-depth description of treatment options and the results achieved to date. It explores the most challenging problems on the basis of the authors’ very extensive clinical experience and examines the most relevant clinical trials. A comprehensive summary is provided of all phase 2 studies (the only available completed studies) and of ongoing and future phase 3 studies. Particular attention is paid to the results of integrated treatment comprising cytoreduction (peritonectomy) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Helpful background information is also included on the definition and clinical assessment of each clinical form. The book, drawing on data from the entire Italian experience as well as world literature, will be an outstanding benchmark for health professionals and researchers.

Abstract

As minimal access approaches to cancer diagnosis, staging, and therapy become more widely used, it is vital for general surgeons, along with laparoscopists, surgical oncologists and medical oncologists, to stay up to date. The editors, a team consisting of a renowned surgical oncologist and a laparoscopic specialist, aim to provide a resource for the practicing general surgeon using basic minimally invasive techniques. The book discusses diagnosis including biopsy with microinstrumentation, staging, and palliative and curative resection. Specific tumor sites are addressed, including esophagus, stomach, spleen, small bowel, pancreato-biliary, hepatic resection, and colo-rectal resection. Minimally invasive approaches to the thoracic and retroperitoneal areas are included. The book provides a thorough overview of basic cancer biology, instrumentation, and ultrasound. Additionally, Greene and Heniford explore controversial issues such as port-site recurrence and the effect of pneumoperitoneum on the spread of cancer cells in the abdomen. Many photographs and line drawings, including 16 in full color, illustrate the principles discussed in the text. A must-have for every practicing general surgeon, laparoscopic fellow, and general surgery resident.
