Die Monografie widmet sich der literatur-, form- und gattungsgeschichtlichen Untersuchung des umfangreichsten in altaramäischer Sprache erhaltenen weisheitlichen Spruchkorpus. Die Papyri, auf denen sich die Sammlung in ihrer ältesten Traditionsstufe erhalten hat, wurden zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im Kontext einer jüdisch-aramäischen Militärkolonie auf der Nilinsel Elephantine im Süden Ägyptens aufgefunden und datieren in die Mitte des fünften vorchristlichen Jahrhunderts. Die Sprüche Achikars, ihrerseits eines der beliebtesten und wirkungsgeschichtlich bedeutsamsten Sujets der spätantiken orientalischen Weisheitsliteratur, sind auf diesen Papyri mit einer weisheitlichen Lehr-Erzählung späteren Entstehungsdatums verbunden. Trotz ihrer überragenden literatur- und formgeschichtlichen Bedeutung wurde die Spruchsammlung bislang fast ausschließlich hinsichtlich ihrer dialektgeografischen Eigenheiten und ihrer Grammatik untersucht, nicht jedoch in literaturvergleichender Perspektive. Mit der nun vorgelegten Monografie versucht der Verfasser, diese Forschungslücke zu schließen und besonders die wichtigen literarischen und formalen Querverbindungen zur alttestamentlichen Weisheitsliteratur vor dem Hintergrund der verwandten Traditionshorizonte zu erhellen. Daraus ergeben sich weitreichende Einsichten in die orts- und kulturübergreifenden Charakteristika des (frühjüdischen?) weisheitlichen Diskurses und mögliche formale und literarische Beziehungen zu zentralen alttestamentlichen Weisheitstexten. The monograph provides a literary, form critical and genre historical examination of the most extensive body of wise sayings recorded in the Ancient Aramaic language. The papyri upon which the collection has been preserved in its oldest traditional form, was discovered in connection with a Jewish-Aramaic military colony on Elephantine Island in the Nile, southern Egypt, at the beginning of the 20th century and dated at around the middle of the fifth century BC. The proverbs of Achikar were one of the most popular and, in terms of their historical impact and influence, most significant subjects of late Antique Oriental wisdom literature. On these papyri they are connected to a wisdom narrative with a later date of origin. Despite their outstanding form critical and literary historical significance, previous study of this collection of proverbs has dealt almost exclusively with aspects of their dialect geography and grammar, but has not examined them from a comparative literary perspective. With this monograph, the author attempts to remedy this research deficit and particularly to illustrate important formal and literary interconnections with Old Testament Wisdom Literature against the backdrop of related traditions. The results are far reaching insights into the interregional and intercultural characteristics of the (early Jewish?) discourse on wisdom and into possible formal and literary connections to central Old Testament Wisdom Literature.

Among the few allusions to mid-first millennium BCE scribal culture are the Aramaic Story of Ahiqar and the Hebrew Tale of Jeremiah and Baruch's Scroll (Jeremiah 36). This study provides a novel interpretation of both tales and proposes a newly identified literary subgenre to which they belong by studying the sources independently for their allusions to scribal culture and comparatively for their literary features.
