Abstract

"Founded under the editorship of the antiquary W J Thoms, the primary intention of Notes and Queries was, and still remains, the asking and answering of readers' questions. It is devoted principally to English language and literature, lexicography, history, and scholarly antiquarianism. Each issue focuses on the works of a particular period, with an emphasis on the factual rather than the speculative. The journal comprises notes, book reviews, readers' queries and replies." --Oxford Journals website viewed 25 February 2016.

Abstract

"Perhaps not all the stories that follow are true. They could, however, be true, and the Reader is invited to ponder this. "So begins Insurmountable Simplicities, Roberto Casati and Achille Varzi's colorful incarnation of the many philosophical conundrums that hide in the wrinkles of everyday life. Why do mirrors seem to invert left and right but not up and down? How do we know whether strawberries taste the same for everyone? Where is it written that we must observe the law, and if it is not written, why should we observe it? What if we could swap brains-or the rest of our bodies? Insurmountable Simplicities is filled with stories, dialogues, and epistolary exchanges that cover a range of themes-such as personal identity, causality and responsibility, fortune, the nature of things, the paradoxes of time and space, the interface between logic and language-in captivating and inventive ways. Clear, concise, and intellectually engaging, this internationally acclaimed book brilliantly demonstrates that the beauty of philosophy resides in its thorough engagement with the simplicities of the world, insurmountable as they might initially appear.

Abstract

This volume discusses cosmological issues in Greek Patristic and Byzantine question-and-answer literature. By adopting this focus, it yields novel insights into both the (theological / philosophical) content and the (literary) form of the texts under scrutiny. How did Greek Patristic and Byzantine authors understand the cosmos of which they were a part and the world in which they lived? And what literary forms did they use to express their questions and answers on these issues? This collection of studies shows that, in order to bring out the important intellectual contribution of the authors under discussion, both ?cosmology? and ?question-and-answer literature? should be defined more broadly than expected. Several papers deal with the crucial corpora by Pseudo-Justin and Maximus the Confessor. Other authors under discussion include Philoponus, Pseudo-Caesarius, Michael Psellus, Severian of Gabala, and Nilus Doxopatrius. Attention also goes to the critical edition of question and answer literature, as well as to the Greek Patristic and Byzantine reception of cosmological questions and answers from Antiquity (i.c. Aristotle, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and Iamblichus).

Abstract

This book examines relations which hold between morphosyntactic form and communicative function in discourse by examining form-function correlations of noninterrogative questions in ordinary English conversation. So-called nontypical declarative and nonclausal questions are identified functionally. The role morphosyntax plays in the production and interpretation of these forms as doing questioning is then considered. Speakers are shown to use specific patterns of morphosyntactic marking to enable recipients to interpret noninterrogatives as functional questions.

Abstract

Critical edition of Ramon Llull's 'Ars ad faciendum et solvendum quaestiones' This work by Ramon Llull, originally composed in Catalan (Art de fer e solre questions), was written in Rome in 1295. It is also known as 'Lectura super Artem inventivam et Tabulam generalem', as it attempts to make the "Ars inventiva veritatis" (op. 44) and "Tabula generalis" (op. 53) more approachable. In the prologue Llull expresses his wish for this work to be translated into Latin. It belongs to the so-called encyclopaedic writings in the Lullian production, and the author announces a thousand questions related mainly to theology. The present work aims to provide a general technique applicable to any subject, a practical usage of the "Ars inventiva veritatis" and the "Tabula generalis". In general, Llull develops some aspects dealt with in op. 44 and op. 53 in order to solve possible objections or to experiment with new procedures. It is another step in the great epistemological project of the Majorcan: to establish a new general science that overcomes the difficulties inherent in scholastic-Aristotelian science; to apply its method to the articles of the Christian faith and to create a universal scientific system as a solid basis for the other sciences.
