La variété des sujets traités confirme la richesse culturelle de notre territoire pendant le Moyen Age, depuis le premier texte littéraire du français (IXème siècle) jusqu'aux premières années du XVIème siècle où se perpétuent les modes artistiques hennuyères des siècles précédents. L'histoire et l'historiographie locales furent mises à l'honneur par trois communications : l'une sur Henri de Valenciennes et la Quatrième Croisade, une autre sur le rôle des femmes dans la transmission de la mémoire familiale, une troisième sur les pratiques magiques à Valenciennes à la veille de la Guerre de Cent Ans. La littérature du Moyen Age a fourni le matériau de huit communications : l'une sur la Séquence de sainte Eulalie, deux sur l'œuvre de Jean Molinet, une sur les activités théâtrales dans les villes hennuyères au Moyen Age, une sur les trouvères du Hainaut et du Cambrésis, trois sur divers aspects de l'intertextualité antique et médiévale, historiographique ou encore épique et romanesque. Des domaines plus pointus comme la musicologie et la production de pierres gravées ont trouvé leur place dans le colloque.
