Les activités de «character merchandising», expression courante pour désigner les utilisations dérivées de personnages réels ou de fiction, ne sont pas récentes. Cependant, elles se sont développées au point d'être souvent victimes de leur propre succès. Après un bref cheminement terminologique et historique, l'auteur démontre - à la lumière d'un exemple concret et célèbre - que l'exploitation dérivée d'une création doit impérativement faire l'objet d'une réflexion globale.
