Abstract

During his distinguished career spanning more than 50 years, Nobel laureate (Chemistry) Glenn T. Seaborg published over 500 works. This volume puts together about 100 of his selected papers. The papers are divided into five categories. Category I consists of papers which detail the discovery of 10 transuranium elements and numerous heavy isotopes of special importance. Category II papers describe the discovery of a number of isotopes which became the workhorses of nuclear medicine or found other applications. Papers in Category III describe how the chemical properties of transuranium elements were originally determined, how chemistry is applied in nuclear sciences, and other chemical investigations, including early work done with the great chemist G.N. Lewis. Papers in Category IV cover radioactive decay chains and nuclear systematics. Lastly, papers in Category V illustrate how the powerful methods of chemistry are used to explain nuclear reactions in low, intermediate and high energy nuclear physics.

Abstract

Nuclear chemistry represents a vital field of basic and applied research. Modern applications cover, for example, fundamental aspects of energetics and high-sensitive, high-selective and non-destructive analytical technologies. Nuclear chemistry and radiopharmaceutical chemistry are increasingly used to bridge pharmaceutical and medical research with state-of-the-art non-invasive molecular diagnosis as well as with patient-individual treatment. While volume I on Introduction to Nuclear Chemistry describes the origin of unstable atoms and their pathways to stabilize, this volume II illustrates the spectrum of modern applications of nuclear and radiochemistry. In various chapters, leading scientists address- the measurement of radiation,- the dosimetric action of radioactive radiation and radiation safety- nuclear dating- elemental analysis by neutron activation,- radiation mass spectroscopy and chemicals speciation,- radiochemical separations,- applications of radiochemistry to life sciences,- the chemistry of radioelements: Tc and At, actinides and the transactinides- fundamentals of modern nuclear energy. This work is conceived to meet the demand of state-of-the-art literature to teach the fundamentals as well as the modern applications of nuclear chemistry. The work will consist of two volumes: the first one covering the basics of nuclear chemistry such as the relevant parameters of instable atomic nuclei, the various modi of radioactive transmutations, the corresponding types of radiation including their detection and dosimetry, and finally the mechanisms of nuclear reactions. The second volume addresses relevant fields of nuclear chemistry, such as the chemistry of radioactive elements, application of radioactive nuclei in life sciences, nuclear energy, waste managements and environmental aspects, radiochemical separations, radioanalytical and spectroscopic methods, etc. Here, leading experts will contribute up-to-date knowledge on the most important application of nuclear chemistry. Frank Rösch is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on fundamental and applied radiochemistry and editor of the 5-volume Handbook of Nuclear Chemistry. In 1996 he was appointed professor of Nuclear Chemistry and Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany.

Abstract

Radiochemistry or nuclear chemistry is the study of radiation from an atomic and molecular perspective, including elemental transformation and reaction effects, as well as physical, health and medical properties. This revised edition of one of the earliest and best-known books on the subject has been updated to bring into teaching the latest developments in research and the current hot topics in the field. To further enhance the functionality of this text, the authors have added numerous teaching aids, examples in MathCAD with variable quantities and options, hotlinks to relevant text sections from the book, and online self-grading tests.
