Edition and translation of Anglo-Saxon text, shedding light on Sunday observance and other issues. Few issues have had as far-reaching consequences as the development of the Christian holy day, Sunday. Every seven days, from the early middle ages, the Christian world has engaged in some kind of change in behaviour, ranging fromparticipation in a simple worship service to the cessation of every activity which could conceivably be construed as work. An important text associated with this process is the so-called Sunday Letter, fabricated as a letter from Christ which dropped out of heaven. In spite of its obviously spurious nature, it was widely read and copied, and translated into nearly every vernacular language. In particular, several, apparently independent, translations were made into Old English. Here, the six surviving Old English copies of the Sunday Letter are edited together for the first time. The Old English texts are accompanied by facing translations, with commentary and glossary, while the introduction examines the development of Sunday observance in the early middle ages and sets the texts in their historical, legal and theological contexts. The many Latin versions of the Sunday Letter arealso delineated, including a newly discovered and edited source for two of the Old English texts. DOROTHY HAINES gained her PhD from the University of Toronto, where she is currently an instructor of Old English.

Full study, with text and facing translation, of an influential tenth-century work. The life and thought of Saint Basil the Great [329-79] were a seminal influence on western theology and monasticism, their echoes reaching as far as Anglo-Saxon England: the hagiographic tradition of this saint began in Greek, butby the end of the tenth century had already been translated three times into Latin and once into Old English. This book presents a new edition and translation of the Old English text, prepared by ©†lfric of Eynsham in the tenth century, with an edition of one of the Latin versions of the Vita Basilii. These are complemented by the first ever full-length study of the hagiographies of Basil, setting these textual traditions against their wider intellectual background. It outlines evidence for the cult of Saint Basil in Anglo-Saxon England from the late-seventh century, together with the influence of his theological thought, especially upon Bede's work. It then moves on toexplore the Old English translation in detail, setting it in the context of the English Benedictine reform.

As well as the Old English original texts, this title provides the reader with modern English parallel-text translations. As a useful comparison, their closest Latin source texts are also reproduced - again with English parallel-text translations. As a leading churchman writing at the time of the Viking raids at the end of the first millennium, AElfric wrote his "Lives" to bolster the faith of English Christians. These three stories of couples who marry but do not consummate their unions point to the ideal of marital celibacy in AElfric's programme of pastoral care. Taken together, the group provides an opportunity to emphasise different but related points about the literal and figurative types of chastity and purity appropriate to the laity. User-friendly format presents the Old English and Latin texts alongside facing-page modern English translations. The introduction places the "Lives of the Virgin Spouses" in literary-historical, manuscript and social contexts and explores AElfric's interest in the hagiographical genre of chaste marriage. The book complements, and provides a fascinating contrast with, Hugh Magennis's "The Old English Life of St Mary of Egypt", also published in the "Exeter Medieval Texts and Studies" series.
