An edition and translation of the four treatises of John of Dara (d. 860) On the Resurrection of Human Bodies. The Christian dogma of resurrection and the ecclesiastical understanding of eschatology are the central points of the treatises. In addition to the spiritual understanding of resurrection, the treatises include material on physical anatomy and psychology, as well as on the philosophical explanation of the elements of creation. The final mimro places the resurrection in the context of the renewal of the whole of creation on the Day of Judgement. Furthermore, the text provides a terminological definition of keywords. Theologically, the concept of the Creator and creation are in focus, along with the logical proof of God's existence, exegetical commentaries on the relevant Biblical passages, and on the vision of the future world.

"This anthology includes the writings of a number of Syriac monastic and ascetical writers from the seventh century who were born and educated in Beth Qatraye (Syriac for Qatar or Region of the Qataris). Isaac of Qatar widely known as Isaac of Nineveh, for example, is considered to be the most influential of all Syriac monastic writers and continues to exert a strong influence in monastic circles today. Many of the others like Dadisho of Qatar, Abraham bar Lipah of Qatar, and Ahob of Qatar were important Syriac writers on spirituality and commentators or exegetes within the Church of the East tradition. These writers, who all originated from the Qatar region and were educated there, reveal the presence of an important school of education that rivaled in its sophistication the other more well-known schools such as the School of Nisibis or the School of Edessa. The Syriac writers of Qatar themselves produced some of the best and most sophisticated writing to be found in all Syriac literature of the seventh century. This anthology presents a selection of these writings for the first time in English translation with accompanying Syriac and Garshuni editions."--

In The Heirs of Theodore Seth M. Stadel examines Aḥob of Qatar, a late 6th-century East Syriac biblical commentator, and his surviving Old Testament exegetical works. He further investigates what can be deduced of Aḥob’s influence on the later East Syriac exegetical tradition, and he details the originality of Aḥob’s exegesis, especially in comparison with earlier and contemporary Greek and Syriac sources. By presenting the first annotated edition, English translation, and study of Aḥob’s extant Old Testament exegetical works, Stadel is able to show that Aḥob represents a distinct voice within the East Syriac exegetical tradition.

No one mentions Syriac, - a dialect of the Aramaic language Jesus spoke -, without referring to Sebastian P. Brock, the Oxford scholar and teacher who has written and taught about everything Syriac, even reorienting the field as The Third Lung of early Christianity (along with Greek and Latin). In 2018, Syriac scholars world-wide gathered in Sigtuna, Sweden, to celebrate with Sebastian his accomplishments and share new directions. Through essays showing what Syriac studies have attained, where they are going, as well as some arenas and connections previously not imagined, flavors of the fruits of laboring in the field are offered.

"Syriac "Sayings of Greek Philosophers" (SGP) is a corpus of sentences preserved in a number of Syriac manuscripts in the form of different collections and under different titles (until now these sentences were mainly referred to as "On the Soul"). SGP consists of two main blocks of sentences represented by two gnomic anthologies, the "Dublin Florilegium," consisting of short maxims, and the "Tur 'Abdin Florilegium," including longer expositions in moral philosophy, or "counsels." The first introductory part of the book not only describes the textual witnesses of SGP, but also surveys all other extant gnomic materials attributed to Greek philosophers and poets (the Seven Sages, Homer, Plato, Menander, Pythagoras, Theano, etc.), including gnomologia, florilegia, exempla, and doxography. Two chapters of the introduction focus on the pedagogical use of the gnomic materials mainly connected with the new Christian forms of rhetorical education based on the study of the Bible and on the texts of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus. The second part of the book contains a critical edition of SGP on the basis of 15 manuscripts."--

"From the 6th century onwards, Syriac patristic florilegia - collections of Greek patristic excerpts in Syriac translation - progressively became a prominent form through which Syriac and Arab Christians shaped their knowledge of theology. In these collections, early Greek Christian literature underwent a substantial process of selection and re-organization. The papers collected in this volume study Syriac florilegia in their own right, as cultural products possessing their own specific textuality, and outline a phenomenology of Syriac patristic florilegia by mapping their diffusion and relevance in time and space, from the 6th to the 17th century, from the Roman Empire to China"--
