Les Gouverneurs-generaux des Pays-Bas espagnols du dix-septieme siecle beneficiaient du conseil de leur confesseur. Ce directeur spirituel, issu du clerge regulier, tint un rôle significatif dans l?organisation du pouvoir politique bruxellois.0Cette etude, qui couvre la periode courant des archiducs Albert et Isabelle jusqu?au dernier Gouverneur-general issu de la famille royale, soit les annees 1598 à 1659, propose, pour la premiere fois, une approche transversale de la fonction. L?auteur demontre que ces religieux furent souvent impliques dans des questions politiques et courtisanes de premiere importance. En exposant combien les parcours individuels de ces religieux furent singuliers, Pierre-François Pirlet souligne egalement le polymorphisme de leur action. Enfin, ce volume met en evidence les liens etroits qu?entretinrent ces conseillers avec la Couronne espagnole, les autorites ecclesiastiques et les membres de la cour de Bruxelles.

This volume of essays by Heinz Schilling represents his three main fields of interest in early modern European history. The first section of the book, entitled 'Urban Society and Reformation', deals with urban society in northern Germany and the Netherlands from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. The author discusses social structure and changes, the problems of religion and mentality as well as political culture and thinking. The second section, 'confessionalization and Second Reformation', treats the paradigm 'Confessionalization', which denotes a fundamental process of social change within Old European society during the second half of the sixteenth and at the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. The third section, 'The Netherlands - the Pioneer Society of Early Modern Europe', deals with the Northern Netherlands as a model for early modern modernization and as a successful republican and 'bourgeois' alternative to the aristocratic Old European society. The essays collected in this book were originally written in German and published over the last fifteen years. The articles have been revised and the notes have been updated. This volume gives a broader English-speaking audience the possibility to read Heinz Schilling's research. It also provides a concise collection of the author's writings for those readers who are already familiar with his studies.

This volume contains Hugo Grotius' first work in the field of Church politics, orginally published in 1613. The book was written to defend the policy of the States of Holland, which was being attacked by the orthodox Calvinistic party in the Netherlands. It was written with an eye to foreign Dutch allies, especially King James I. Grotius' Latin text is here edited critically for the first time and provided with an introduction, an English translation and an extensive commentary. In several appendixes, various texts that are important for the background and the reception of the book are printed, many of them for the first time. Ordinum Pietas is one of the key texts for the knowledge of the religious disputes in the Netherlands during the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-1621).
