This book elucidates the tissue structure and cell composition of the organs of zebrafish at the microscopic, ultrastructural and molecular levels. The distribution of important macromolecular substances is shown and the morphological relationship between different components is analyzed. The book is divided into 15 chapters and contains more than 700 structural photos, all of which are original experimental pictures of the research group. It shows the histological panorama of the whole zebrafish both in cross and longitudinal sections and covers and interprets the tissues and organs of zebrafish in detail, including oropharynx, taste buds, pharyngeal teeth, liver, etc. A brief text description of the structure and function meaning is available for every picture to facilitate the audience understanding the theoretical knowledge more vivid and concrete. In addition, the 3D reconstruction of the main organs of zebrafish is completed by computer-aided technology, and the three-dimensional morphology of the organs is displayed in an intuitive form. This book provides a reference for postgraduates and researchers in anatomy, biology, animal medicine, animal science, aquaculture, developmental biology, medicine, and experimental animals.

This book introduces the basics of cellular and molecular biology on a basic level including detailed explanations and examples. It lays the foundation for a systematic understanding of biology, which is essential in order to handle big data in biomedical research. Comprehension of what is measured, how it is measured and how to interpret results is a precondition for the development of novel therapies against diseases. Interdisciplinary research benefits from versatile approaches to generate and test hypotheses, which may lead to new discoveries. Therefore, it requires a new generation of biologists from diverse backgrounds - and they need this introduction. This book helps students and experts from e.g. computer science, informatics, mathematics, physics, and related fields or even if you are in sales and marketing and want to have a better understanding of the biology behind certain products. The Author Lorenz Adlung is an independent junior group leader for systems immunology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. He obtained his PhD in systems biology from Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center. Lorenz received his postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. His original research articles are published in Journals like Molecular Systems Biology, and Cell. He won prestigious prizes e.g., the Young Investigators Award from the Gips Schüle Stiftung and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship from the European Union. Lorenz is an advocate of interdisciplinary, free and open science. He gave a TEDx talk on the matter and loves scientific outreach.

This volume explores the dynamic topic of tight junctions. The book focuses on tight junctions' role in sealing adjacent epithelial cells in a narrow band just beneath their apical surface. The book explains how tight junctions consist of a network of claudins and other proteins, and delves into how they hold cells together and form functional and protective barriers, regulating the passage of molecules and ions through the space between cells. The book opens with a discussion of the evolution of research on tight junctions, discussing a range of primary areas of growth, including the current knowledge on the particular physiological function of different claudins due to the development of an array of knock out mice. The chapters also explore in-depth studies of tight junctions in specific tissues (gut, lung and endothelia). This book offers a comprehensive understanding on post-translational modifications of occludin and its impact on tight junction function, as well as the molecular composition and function of tricellular tight junctions. This volume is particularly relevant to students and scientists in neuroscience, cell biology, physiology, cell differentiation, and cancer research.
