The volume is curated by Gulnara Samoilova, founder of the Women Street Photographers project. Twenty-five years after his seminal 1988 book, Invisible City, Ken Schles revisits his archive and fashions a narrative of lost youth: a delirious, peripatetic walk in the evening air of an irretrievable Downtown New York as he saw and experienced it. Night Walk is a substantive and intimate chronicle of New York's last pre-Internet bohemian outpost, a stream-ofconsciousness portrayal that peels back layers of petulance and squalor to expose the frisson and striving of a life lived amongst the rubble. Here Schles embodies the flaneur as Susan Sontag defines it, as a connoisseur of empathy ... cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. We see in Night Walk a new and revelatory Ulysses for the twenty-first century: a searching tale of wonder and desire, life and love in the dying hulk of a ruined American city.

Thomas Struth is one of the best-known photographers to come out of the school of Bernd and Hilla Becher. In this celebrated volume, Struth presents a series of urban streetscapes from cities such as Edinburgh, Lima, Pyongyang, Naples, and New York City, all taken in similar conditions-devoid of human activity. Struth refers to these mundane buildings, unpopulated streets and anonymous facades as “unconscious places”-environments that are imbued with meaning only by the viewer. Captured with exquisite technical prowess and presented with powerful, restrained neutrality, Struth’s images allow us to fully appreciate a city’s character-from its telephone wires above to the pavement below. Renowned sociologist Richard Sennett’s illuminating essay reveals how Struth’s sober, lucid photography leads the viewer to create their own conclusions, rather than forcing a perspective. The resulting interplay among photographer, viewer, and landscape may hold the key to understanding how architecture affects our daily lives.

Unconscious Places presents Thomas Struth's photographs of streets in all parts of the world: narrow lanes in Edinburgh and Naples, satellite towns in Pyongyang, thoroughfares in Lima and Los Angeles, grand boulevards in St. Petersburg, New York, and Beijing. Frequently devoid of people, Struth's urban landscapes are also a critical depiction of different human habitats.

"Photographer Thomas Struth is one of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from Europe in the late twentieth century. With great precision, clarity of color, and an unwavering instinct for composition, he addresses both important photographic motifs and informal, often little-known subjects. Struth characteristically treats the various aspects of his photographs in an even-handed way, a neutrality he also applies to the viewer, for he puts the viewing public on a par with his pictorial world. This lavish volume is the most comprehensive study of Struth's œuvre, showcasing all of the famous series and images: the streetscapes of Düsseldorf, New York City, Rome, China, and elsewhere; the family portraits; the museum photographs; the flowers, plants, and rainforests; and most recently, the studies of science and technology. Struth revisits many of his subjects, adding ever more layers of complexity and interpretation. Essays by renowned curators and critics complete this essential study of one of the world's major artists."--Publisher description.

"With a preface by Mark Blaisse, author of Before They Passed Away, this book picks out one street in 200 different cities across the 7 continents. By means of infographics and a short text, the street becomes a symbol for a culture, a country in its entirety. Seven years of travel were needed to make this book. With a focus on detailed street knowledge, this is the perfect gift for travelers and photography enthusiasts alike"--Publisher's description. 200 countries; one street each; seven years of travelling and collecting photos, stories, facts and figures about each country. This is not just another photography book. It reveals everything that a street means to society: education, wisdom, youth, experience, happiness, stories, food, and so much more. This is the raw material of life, drawn directly from the experiences of the Belgian photographer Jeroen Swolfs. Seeing the street as a unifying theme, he travelled in search of that one street in each place - sometimes by a harbour or a railway station - that comprised the country as a whole. Each stunning image conveys culture, colours, rituals, even the history of the city and country where he found them. Swolfs sees the street as a universal meeting place, a platform of crowds, a centre of news and gossip, a place of work, and a playground for children. Swolfs's streets are a matrix for community; his photographs are published at a time when the unique insularity of local communities everywhere has never been more under threat.
