Directeur de recherches au CNRS, Jean-Claude Golvin a consacré sa vie à l’étude des monuments antiques. De la Tunisie à l’Egypte, puis à l’ensemble du monde méditerranéen, il a travaillé sur les sites les plus prestigieux et publié d’importants travaux scientifiques.Depuis son intégration à l’Institut Ausonius, en 1993, il s’est consacré plus particulièrement à la restitution graphique des monuments et des villes. Ses réflexions théoriques et ses réalisations ont donné un souffle nouveau et une actualité à cet exercice inventé par les architectes de la Renaissance et qui constitue l’aboutissement souhaitable de toute étude archéologique.Ce volume est composé de deux parties. D’une part l’hommage de chercheurs qui, parmi tant d’autres spécialistes d‘archéologie, ont eu le plaisir de côtoyer J.-C. Golvin, de l’autre, ses propres réflexions sur les questions posées par la restitution des monuments disparus, à travers une sélection d’articles remarquables.

This wide-ranging, interdisciplinary collection explores different ways of visualising Greek and Roman epic from Homer to Statius, in both ancient and modern culture. The book presents new perspectives on Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, Valerius Flaccus and Statius, and covers the re-working of epic matter in tragedy, opera, film, late antique speeches of praise, story-boarding, sculpture and wall-painting. The chapters use a variety of methods to address the relationship between narrative and visuality, exploring how and why epic has inspired artists, authors and directors and offering fresh visual interpretations of epic texts. Themes and issues discussed include: intermediality, ekphrasis and panegyric, illusion and deception, imagery and deferral, alienation and involvement, the multiplicity of possible visual responses to texts, three-dimensionality, miniaturisation, epic as cultural capital, and the specificity of genres, both literary and visual.

Avec l'essor de l'humanisme et la redécouverte de l'art antique à la Renaissance, la connaissance des "antiquités" est apparue comme un champ d'investigation à part entière dans lequel se sont illustrés de nombreux lettrés, mais aussi des artistes : esprits curieux et passionnés d'antiquités que l'on appelait alors les "antiquaires". Pour documenter les vestiges ou illustrer leurs travaux, ces érudits durent travailler avec des dessinateurs, des architectes, des graveurs ou encore des professionnels du livre. En attirant l'attention sur ces collaborations, les auteurs de cet ouvrage ont voulu mettre en lumière une catégorie d'images qui interrogent notre conception des techniques de reproduction artistique, de la représentation documentaire et du métier d'artiste dans les sociétés de l'époque moderne. Ce livre entend aussi poser quelques jalons dans un chapitre de l'histoire de l'art qui reste encore à écrire : la question du rayonnement de la pensée antiquaire et de sa production savante dans les milieux artistiques

In the last few years a reconsideration of the past of the ancients and of the concepts correlated to it (e.g. the ʻclassicalʼ) has been important to many scholars. The present volume adds to the range of perspectives on the antique by expanding research to include different, hitherto unexplored spheres, whether that be chronological perspectives or disciplinary ones, as well as by opening up the discussion to include textual types that previous studies have treated little or not at all. Fourteen essays on various fields aim at defining the categories in which the past is constructed, thought, valued, functionalized and redrawn. They concentrate on the category of the ʻantiqueʼ and the role it plays in texts and authors, with specific reference to the ʻtopicalizationʼ, conceptualization and renegotiation of the ʻantiqueʼ and the ʻancientsʼ. The textual types analysed belong to the following fields: ancient philosophy and history of ideas, ethnography, historiography and antiquarianism, literature and philology, grammar and Roman law, Renaissance studies.
