Die US-mexikanische Grenze wird im Grenzgebiet »die Linie« genannt - eine Bezeichnung, die Vorstellungen von einer Grenze hervorruft, die leichtfüßig überquert werden könnte. Die Grenze wird jedoch zunehmend hochgerüstet, was den Übergang für jene problematisch macht, die keinen offiziellen Status besitzen. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Tijuana und San Diego zeichnet Theresa Elze nach, wie hierauf mit der Bildung spezifischer Gemeinschaften reagiert wird: Die Akteure werden zu Komplizen! Can we communicate the incommunicable? Language is general, but the “depths of the soul” are unique, and only the experience lived in silence is authentic. Would it be possible to find a language that would appear to say something but that would communicate nothing but the incommunicable? The present volume analyses how, by developing the simulacrum of a language or “pure media”, Klossowski managed to move beyond the prevarications of Gide, so hesitant to speak or remain silent about his “Uranianism”, and the wrath of Bataille or Sade, equating destruction and purity, to finally arrive at the Nietzschean innocence that creates gods. Reluctant Accomplice is a volume of the wartime letters of Dr. Konrad Jarausch, a German high-school teacher of religion and history who served in a reserve battalion of Hitler's army in Poland and Russia, where he died of typhoid in 1942. He wrote most of these letters to his wife, Elisabeth. His son, acclaimed German historian Konrad H. Jarausch, brings them together here to tell the gripping story of a patriotic soldier of the Third Reich who, through witnessing its atrocities in the East, begins to doubt the war's moral legitimacy. These letters grow increasingly critical, and their vivid descriptions of the mass deaths of Russian POWs are chilling. They reveal the inner conflicts of ordinary Germans who became reluctant accomplices in Hitler's merciless war of annihilation, yet sometimes managed to discover a shared humanity with its suffering victims, a bond that could transcend race, nationalism, and the enmity of war. When it comes to historical violence and contemporary inequality, none of us are completely innocent. We may not be direct agents of harm, but we may still contribute to, inhabit, or benefit from regimes of domination that we neither set up nor control. Arguing that the familiar categories of victim, perpetrator, and bystander do not adequately account for our connection to injustices past and present, Michael Rothberg offers a new theory of political responsibility through the figure of the implicated subject. The Implicated Subject builds on the comparative, transnational framework of Rothberg's influential work on memory to engage in reflection and analysis of cultural texts, archives, and activist movements from such contested zones as transitional South Africa, contemporary Israel/Palestine, post-Holocaust Europe, and a transatlantic realm marked by the afterlives of slavery. As these diverse sites of inquiry indicate, the processes and histories illuminated by implicated subjectivity are legion in our interconnected world. An array of globally prominent artists, writers, and thinkers—from William Kentridge, Hito Steyerl, and Jamaica Kincaid, to Hannah Arendt, Primo Levi, Judith Butler, and the Combahee River Collective—speak to this interconnection and show how confronting our own implication in difficult histories can lead to new forms of internationalism and long-distance solidarity.
