L'auto-traduction est une pratique assez rare. Parmi les quelques auteurs qui ont choisi de se traduire eux-mêmes se trouve Eric de Kuyper, auteur d'un cycle romanesque écrit en néerlandais dont il a traduit lui-même les deux premiers tomes en français : Aan zee, 1988 (Vacances ostendaises, 1995) ; De hoed van tante Jeannot, 1989 (Le chapeau de tante Jeannot, 1996). Dans ces quatre textes, qui racontent l'histoire d'une famille plurilingue et multiculturelle, l'ouvrage d'Ann-Mari Gunnesson étudie avec précision les écarts culturels entre l'original en néerlandais et la traduction en français. L'enjeu est de savoir si l'image culturelle reflétée dans les deux versions linguistiques est identique. Autrement dit : l'auto-traducteur a-t-il modifié le texte source en vue de le faire mieux correspondre au monde conceptuel du lectorat cible ? S'appuyant sur les théories associées à la branche de recherche à caractère multi-disciplinaire dite « Translation Studies », cette étude ouvre de nouvelles perspectives sur l'auto-traduction en Belgique.
