The catalogue that accompanies the 2016 Costume Institute exhibition "Manus x Machina" features exceptional fashions that reconcile traditional hand techniques with innovative machine technologies such as 3-D printing, laser cutting, circular knitting, computer modeling, bonding and laminating, and ultrasonic welding. Featuring 90 astonishing pieces, ranging from Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's iconic tweed suit to Karl Lagerfeld's 3-D-printed version, and from Yves Saint Laurent's bird-of-paradise dress to Iris van Herpen's silicone adaptation - all beautifully photographed by Nicholas Alan Cope - this fascinating book is an exploration of both the artistry and the future of fashion. Interviews with Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen; Hussein Chalayan, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino; Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton; Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler; Iris van Herpen; Christopher Kane; Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel; Miuccia Prada; and Gareth Pugh enhance this expansive and absorbing book.

Within a varied contemporary panorama, the exhibition displays a selection of 'design events' of different kinds and of different scales, organised into eight possible actions; eight metamorphoses capable of transforming materials or components into 'artefacts', into active elements of our daily lives and culture. The four categories formulated a hundred and fifty years ago by Gottfried Semper, and doubled in number to bring them up to date with contemporary conditions, are used as a grid to organise the complex structure of the artificial environment; and as the instrument for a possible revision of the axioms and methods of 'modern design', in its constant attempt to adapt them to the problems and aspirations of a complex world.Sempering looks at architecture, landscapes and objects of the last decade crossing the established boundaries of every possible system of the arts, of every division in skills and sectors. Actions such as stacking heavy blocks, connecting light structures, moulding soft materials, engraving fire casings, folding tin sheets, weaving threads, arranging tiles or blowing air can be seen as basic actions capable of inventing unexpected forms by the use of new technologies, but also as the testing of well-established 'customs' of formal traditions in their response to new conditions.

Throughout her 20-year career, Neri Oxman has invented not only new ideas for materials, buildings and construction processes, but also new frameworks for interdisciplinary and interspecies collaborations. She coined the term "material ecology" to describe her process of producing techniques and objects informed by the structural, systemic and aesthetic wisdom of nature. Groundbreaking for its solid technological and scientific basis, its rigorous and daring experimentation, its visionary philosophy and its unquestionable attention to formal elegance, Oxmans work operates at the intersection of biology, engineering, architecture and artistic design, material science and computer science. This book designed by Irma Boom and published to accompany a midcareer retrospective of Oxmans work highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the designer's practice. It demonstrates how Oxmans contributions allow us to question and redefine the idea of modernism a concept in constant evolution and of organic design. Some of the projects featured in the book and exhibition include the Silk Pavilion, which harnesses silkworms' ability to generate a 3-D cocoon out of a single thread silk in order to create architectural constructions; Aguahoja, a water-based fabrication platform that prints structures made out of different biopolymers; and Glass, an additive manufacturing technology for 3-D printing optically transparent glass structures at architectural dimensions.
