Abstract

This derivative volume stemming from content included in our seminal Power Electronics Handbook takes its chapters related to renewables and establishes them at the core of a new volume dedicated to the increasingly pivotal and as yet under-published intersection of Power Electronics and Alternative Energy. While this re-versioning provides a corollary revenue stream to better leverage our core handbook asset, it does more than simply re-package existing content. Each chapter will be significantly updated and expanded by more than 50%, and all new introductory and summary chapters will be added to contextualize and tie the volume together. Therefore, unlike traditional derivative volumes, we will be able to offer new and updated material to the market and include this largely original content in our ScienceDirect Energy collection. Due to the inherently multi-disciplinary nature of renewables, many engineers come from backgrounds in Physics, Materials, or Chemical Engineering, and therefore do not have experience working in-depth with electronics. As more and more alternative and distributed energy systems require grid hook-ups and on-site storage, a working knowledge of batteries, inverters and other power electronics components becomes requisite. Further, as renewables enjoy broadening commercial implementation, power electronics professionals are interested to learn of the challenges and strategies particular to applications in alternative energy. This book will bring each group up-to-speed with the primary issues of importance at this technological node. This content clarifies the juncture of two key coverage areas for our Energy portfolio: alternative sources and power systems. It serves to bridge the information in our power engineering and renewable energy lists, supporting the growing grid cluster in the former and adding key information on practical implementation to the latter. Provides a thorough overview of the key technologies, methods and challenges for implementing power electronics in alternative energy systems for optimal power generation Includes hard-to-find information on how to apply converters, inverters, batteries, controllers and more for stand-alone and grid-connected systems Covers wind and solar applications, as well as ocean and geothermal energy, hybrid systems and fuel cells

Abstract

"C.S. Lewis rightly instructed, "The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." This book aims to achieve this task by pushing the frontiers of scholarship for securing a sustainable future through green energy and infrastructure. This encompasses the notion that what we create is in harmony and integration with both the spatial and temporal domains. Through numerous practical examples and illustrations, the book examines a comprehensive review of the latest science on indoor environmental health, energy requirements for buildings, and the "greening" of infrastructure. Also, it provides a discussion on the underlying properties of biomass and its influence on furthering energy conversion technologies. Energy storage is essential for driving the integration of renewable energy, and different storage approaches are discussed in terms of power balancing, grid stability, and reliability. Features : Focuses on the importance of coupling green energy with green infrastructure, provides an unbiased update of the state-of-the-art of sustainability science, discusses utilizing sustainable building materials for simultaneous improvement in energy, economic, and environmental bottom lines for industry, and illuminates practical steps that need to be undertaken to achieve a greener infrastructure. Green energy and infrastructure : Securing a sustainable future is appropriate for researchers, students, and decision-makers seeking the latest, practical information on environmental sustainability"--

Abstract

The Interlaw book on Renewable Energy is a comprehensive overview of renewable energy policies and developments in the major countries active in the field. It addresses, in a practical and legal perspective, the main interrogations encountered by investors and policy makers on how to efficiently deploy renewable energy, particularly in terms of support schemes, grid connection costs, priority and congestion rules or permitting.

Abstract

Abstract

Renewable Energy: Sources for Fuels and Electricity provides a sound and thorough look at the need to find new ways to meet the growing demand for energy. Because of the increasing severity of problems posed by conventional sources of energy - threats to the security of the world's oil supply, the environmental costs of burning fossil fuels, issues of safety and weapons proliferation related to nuclear power - the world's dependence on conventional energy sources must be reduced both by using energy more efficiently and by shifting to alternative, less problematic supply sources. Renewable energy can play a central role in addressing this challenge. This book offers a cutting-edge review of the prospects for renewable energy. Overall performance, cost, market potential, and environmental impact are assessed for fuels and electricity derived from hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaics, solar-thermal, geothermal, ocean and biomass energy sources. In addition, policies for adopting renewables on a broad scale are provided. This book will serve as an essential reference tool for policymakers, industrial leaders, economists, scientists, and environmentalists who are concerned with matters of energy, the environment, and development.
