Abstract

In Southern and Southeast Asia, as in many other regions of the world, traditional societies still have their singer of tales, a sage-poet-musician, who sings narratives of transgression, ordeal and the deeds of a hero and a heroine. It is often through the quest for a wife that an initiatory ordeal is set in motion, the crisis at the very heart of the story unraveled by the epic, to end in peace and harmony. Through the arts of poetry, music and sometimes dance, the epic opens up a whole world, a vivid reality, in its array of social, political and religious views, and in its moral code, with the psychological and emotional attitudes that spring from them. The book presents the songs in Palawan, with French and English translations facing it. An interpretative analysis in both French and English follows. The epic is accompanied with a 45-minute CD of the bard singing Mamiminbin.--Publisher's description.
