Abstract

Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) was a German physicist, psychologist, and philosopher, best known as the founder of psychophysics, the experimental study of the relation between mental and physical processes. Michael Heidelberger's exploration of Fechner's writings reestablishes Fechner's place in the history and philosophy of science.

Abstract

This collection celebrates the 150th anniversary of Fechner's book on Psychophysics (originally published ten years after his epiphany of Oct. 22, 1850). Topics include modern assessments of the problems with which Fechner wrestled. Also included are more general discussions of psychophysical methodology, psychophysical theory, and how these two things can be useful in areas not normally associated with psychophysics. Furthermore, these works provide an entrée into Fechner’s ideas, which is perhaps more accessible than his seminal work itself.

Abstract

Gustav Theodor Fechner's (1801-1887) philosophical, ethical and aesthetic ideas are less well-known to the public than his scientific works. This volume is the result of an interdisciplinary colloquium organized at the University of Leipzig. It undertakes to explore the implications of those ideas for the 20th century humanities from a variety of perspectives- philosophy, theology, linguistics, cultural studies, literary studies and the theory of science. There is a strong emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of Fechner's achievement. Consideration is also given to a number of biographical
