Abstract

This book provides the advanced issues of FPGA design as the underlying theme of the work. In practice, an engineer typically needs to be mentored for several years before these principles are appropriately utilized. The topics that will be discussed in this book are essential to designing FPGA's beyond moderate complexity. The goal of the book is to present practical design techniques that are otherwise only available through mentorship and real-world experience.

Abstract

The purpose of Handbook of FPGA Design Security is to provide a practical approach to managing security in FPGA designs for researchers and practitioners in the electronic design automation (EDA) and FPGA communities, including corporations, industrial and government research labs, and academics. Handbook of FPGA Design Security combines theoretical underpinnings with a practical design approach and worked examples for combating real world threats. To address the spectrum of lifecycle and operational threats against FPGA systems, a holistic view of FPGA security is presented, from formal top level specification to low level policy enforcement mechanisms. This perspective integrates recent advances in the fields of computer security theory, languages, compilers, and hardware. The net effect is a diverse set of static and runtime techniques that, working in cooperation, facilitate the composition of robust, dependable, and trustworthy systems using commodity components.

Abstract

FPGA Design: Best Practices for Team-based Design Philip Simpson Many Companies struggle with establishing a working FPGA design methodology across design teams in their Company. As design teams become more dispersed globally, the need increases for a standard design methodology. This book describes best practices for successful FPGA design. It is the result of the author’s meetings with hundreds of customers on the challenges facing each of their FPGA design teams. By gaining an understanding into their design environments, processes, what works and what does not work, key areas of concern in implementing system designs have been identified and a recommended design methodology to overcome these challenges has been developed. This book’s content has a strong focus on design teams that are spread across sites. The goal being to increase the productivity of FPGA design teams by establishing a common methodology across design teams; enabling the exchange of design blocks across teams. Coverage includes the complete FPGA design flow, from the basics to advanced techniques. • Presents complete, field-tested methodology for FPGA design, focused on design reuse across design teams; • Offers best practices for FPGA timing closure, in-system debug, and board design; • Details techniques to resolve common pitfalls in designing with FPGAs.

Abstract

This book is concerned with the emerging field of High Performance Reconfigurable Computing (HPRC), which aims to harness the high performance and relative low power of reconfigurable hardware–in the form Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)–in High Performance Computing (HPC) applications. It presents the latest developments in this field from applications, architecture, and tools and methodologies points of view. We hope that this work will form a reference for existing researchers in the field, and entice new researchers and developers to join the HPRC community.  The book includes:  Thirteen application chapters which present the most important application areas tackled by high performance reconfigurable computers, namely: financial computing, bioinformatics and computational biology, data search and processing, stencil computation e.g. computational fluid dynamics and seismic modeling, cryptanalysis, astronomical N-body simulation, and circuit simulation.     Seven architecture chapters which present both commercial and academic parallel FPGA architectures, low latency and high performance FPGA-based networks and memory architectures for parallel machines, and a high speed optical dynamic reconfiguration mechanism for HPRC.  Five tools and methodologies chapters which address the important issue of productivity and high performance in HPRC. These include a study of precision and arithmetic issues in HPRC, comparative studies of C-based high level synthesis tools and RTL-based approaches, taxonomy of HPRC tools and a framework of their analysis, and an integrated hardware-software-application approach to HPRC.

Abstract

This book describes the synthesis of logic functions using memories. It is useful to design field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) that contain both small-scale memories, called look-up tables (LUTs), and medium-scale memories, called embedded memories.  This is a valuable reference for both FPGA system designers and CAD tool developers, concerned with logic synthesis for FPGAs.  Anyone using logic gates to design logic circuits, you can benefit from the methods described in this book.  Describes in detail the synthesis of logic functions using memories;  Introduces a look-up tables (LUT) cascade as a new architecture for logic synthesis;  Shows logic design methods for index generation functions;  Introduces C-measure, which specifies the complexity of Boolean functions;  Introduces hash-based design methods, which efficiently synthesize index generation functions by pairs of smaller memories and can be applied to IP address tables, packet filtering, terminal access controllers, memory patch circuits, virus scanning circuits, intrusion detection circuits, fault map of memories, code converters and pattern matching.  .

Abstract

This book provides a gradual description of very-high-speed integrated circuits hardware description language (VHDL), targeting the design of digital systems to be implemented in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms. It is organized in a very didactic way. The adopted methodology was matured over 20 years of teaching experience in the subject. The examples in the book were planned targeting two FPGA platforms, one used widely around the world and the other one developed by a Brazilian company.
