Fichte n'est pas un avocat inconditionnel de la foi chrétienne. Mais son influence sur la pensée religieuse et chrétienne a été considérable. C'est trop peu dire qu'il continue à marquer la théologie ; en s'efforçant d'articuler le rapport de Dieu et de la subjectivité humaine, il est lui-même théologien. La religion n'a jamais été totalement absente de sa pensée. Mais c'est à la fin de sa vie qu'il propose la vision la plus élaborée de sa théologie. La connaissance de celle-ci aide à pénétrer jusqu'au cœur de la vision de ce penseur profond et difficile. Les travaux qui étudient la théologie de Fichte sont pourtant peu nombreux. En langue française, le présent ouvrage est le seul entièrement consacré à fournir une présentation complète, et cependant concise, de l'évolution et des grands thèmes de la réflexion théologique du penseur de Rammenau. Il parcourt toute son œuvre, depuis les textes de la phase prékantienne jusqu'aux écrits de la dernière période, dans laquelle le philosophe se rapproche de l'évangile de Jean et déploie plus que jamais les thèmes de sa théologie. La conclusion de l'ouvrage évoque le rapport de la pensée fichtéenne à l'herméneutique, à la morale et à la mystique chrétienne.

This is the first book in English to elucidate the central issues in the work of Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814), a figure crucial to the movement of philosophy from Kant to German idealism. The book explains Fichte's notion of subjectivity and how his particular view developed out of Kant's accounts of theoretical and practical reason. Fichte argued that the subject has a self-positing structure which distinguishes it from a thing or an object. Thus, the subject must be understood as an activity rather than a thing and is self-constituting in a way that an object is not. In the final chapter, Professor Neuhouser considers how this doctrine of the self-positing subject enables us to understand the possibility of the self's autonomy, or self-determination.
