Toxic fire effluents are responsible for the majority of fire deaths, and an increasing large majority of fire injuries, driven by the widespread and increasing use of synthetic polymers. Fire safety has focused on preventing ignition and reducing flame spread through reducing the rate of heat release, while neglecting the important issue of fire toxicity. This is the first reference work on fire toxicity and the only scientific publication on the subject in the last 15 years.Assessment of toxic effects of fires is increasingly being recognised as a key factor in the assessment of fire

This authorative reference work provides a comprehensive source of reference for regulators, researchers and all those concerned with the flammability testing of materials over three industrial sectors: construction, transport and mining. The book uses practical application via the careful selection of case studies with an overall emphasis on specific types of tests that are widely accepted and internationally practised in a variety of applications. This book will be particularly welcome in simplifying the difficult and often confusing area of national regulations and fire test procedures.

This book presents the results of an experiment assessing the impact of spruce wood joints on the creation and development of fire when these joints are applied within a façade. The book includes an extensive analysis of wooden cladding, which is a flammable material in which the elements are connected lengthwise using various types of joint. The parameters of the experiment, as well as the setting, material criteria and evaluation criteria are described in detail. The results confirm that the joint type used has an impact on the selected evaluation criteria and thus also on the potential spread of fire.

This SpringerBrief summarizes a full-scale, reduced commodity fire testing comparison of cartoned Lithium ion batteries and FM Global standard commodities in a rack storage configuration, as reported by FM Global. Tests evaluate the flammability characteristics of the materials and the effectiveness of ceiling level only sprinkler protection. The testing methods, discussed in depth, are scaled down from standard commodity classification testing due to the inordinate costs of Li-ion batteries. Small format Li-ion battery commodities represent both commercially available battery formats and Li-ion battery containing devices. The selected Li-ion battery types are individual 18650 format cylindrical cells, power tool packs comprised of 18650 format cells and polymer cells. The selected comparison commodities are the FM Global standard Class 2 and Cartoned Unexpanded Plastic (CUP). The results offer insight into the combined effects of different storage heights, ceiling height, protection system design, battery density, state of charge and battery type. Flammability of Cartoned Lithium Ion Batteries is intended for practitioners as a tool for analyzing commodity testing methods and providing data about potential hazards. Researchers working in a related field will also find the book valuable.

This book addresses the performance of a multi-storey timber building subjected to a model fire that represents a real, potentially devastating internal fire. Readers will learn about factors concerning fire hazards in buildings; the mechanisms of how fires start and spread; and the degrading impact of fire on wood and wood-based materials, especially their mechanical properties. The book also discusses the fire resistance of timber buildings and the design principles for fire safety, summarised in Eurocodes. In turn, a fire test on a full-size wooden structure demonstrates the principles discussed. The test makes up an essential part of the book, as to its individual steps: the development, planning, execution and subsequent assessment. This is complemented by detailed temperature monitoring at hundreds of individual spots and the reaction of the wood constructions, illustrated in extensive photo documentation. The temperature and fire development presented there show the fire's initial mechanism and its further behaviour in a wood construction. The test proved the feasibility of fire protection and safe design of timber buildings, offering insights that can be generally applied in research, material and construction development. Accordingly, the book will be especially useful for architects, building and fire engineers, as well as researchers dealing with the fire performance of timber buildings.
