The bipolar disorder also called manic-depressive illness is one of the ten pathologies the World Health Organization considers as worrying. This illness is a complex temper disorder with effects 3 on the patient’s behavior, his thoughts and his actions. Some years ago antidepressants were considered as efficient in the treatment of the depressive phase but responsible for maniac troubles and rapid cycles. Such medication is prescribed to lots of patients; however, none of these antidepressants are recommended for this pathology except for Fluoxetine in combination with Olanzapine. Recent surveys have enabled us to take stock of the efficiency and the correct utilization time of these so frequently consumed medicines. We have also been interested in the controversy about their risk of inducing a maniac period or rapid cycles. As only a few surveys are available, it is difficult to give a clear opinion on the efficiency of antidepressants. These may induce a maniac period but only in the presence of some risk factors. As far as possible, antidepressants should not be used, not because they may cause a maniac phase but because their efficiency has not been clearly and sufficiently proved. If the doctor chooses to prescribe these, he will avoid the inhibitors of the Monoamine Oxydase A and the Tricyclical antidepressants because of their side effects, their interactions and their higher risks of a maniac phase. These thymoregulators are the Selective inhibitors of the recapture of the Serotonine as the Fluoxetine (in combination with the Olanzapine) which are first proposed. The Quetiapine which is also approved of is useful for patients with rapid cycles in which case antidepressants are not recommended. The antidepressant doses to be used are not fixed as they are not recommended for this pathology. This could provide food for a further consideration.
