Abstract

Based on over 50 years experience in geotechnical engineering, this book summarizes the mechanisms of sinkhole formation in limestone (or karst) terrain. The author also provides methods for overcoming sinkhole-related failures and for avoiding or minimizing future sinkhole collapses that impact on human activity. Professor Sowers also discusses site investigation, as well as the design and construction methods that are appropriate for building foundations in areas where sinkholes are likely to develop. It is written for engineers and geologists, in addition to other professionals who work together to solve sinkhole problems.

Abstract

Proceedings of Geo-Denver 2007, New Peaks in Geotechnics, held in Denver, Colorado, February 18-21, 2007. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 38 peer-reviewed papers on shallow foundations. Historically, shallow foundations were the first used in supporting man's early attempts in building. Over time there has been a continual need to better model the behavior of shallow foundations with continued advancements in technology, design and construction procedures. These papers provide new concepts and comparisons related to the design of shallow foundations and deep compaction improvement for shallow foundations.

Abstract

Proceedings of Geo-Denver 2007, New Peaks in Geotechnics, held in Denver, Colorado, February 18-21, 2007. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 22 papers on geotechnical risk assessment and management, especially reliability-based design. Until recently, attention has been devoted to the ultimate limit state design, but interest in applying reliability-based design for the serviceability limit state appears to be growing. Reliability-based design can now be used in a rational and practical design mode for classical problems such as foundations and retaining walls.

Abstract

Proceedings of sessions of the GeoShanghai Conference, held in Shanghai, China, June 6-8, 2006. Hosted by Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering, China. In cooperation with the Geo-Institute of ASCE; Georgia Institute of Technology; and University of Kansas. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 44 papers covering recent advances in the research and construction of shallow foundations, pile foundations, and limit state design. A keynote paper by Professor Harry Poulos summarizes recent advances in the settlement of pile groups. A section of 15 papers addresses statistical applications and the use of limit state design for foundations. Another section of 25 papers on deep foundations describe a series of advances in the estimation of pile capacity and pile installation issues. The final section includes three papers that focus on advances in the estimation of settlement associated with shallow foundations.

Abstract

Proceedings of sessions of GeoShanghai 2010, held in Shanghai, China, June 3-5, 2010. Hosted by Tongji University, China; Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering, China; Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, China. In cooperation with Alaska University Transportation Center, USA; Geo-Institute of ASCE, USA; Deep Foundation Institute, USA; East China Architectural Design and Research Institute Company, China; Georgia Institute of Technology, USA; Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan; Transportation Research Board, USA; University of Newcastle, Australia; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA; University of Kansas, USA; University of Tennessee, USA; Vienna University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Austria. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 49 papers presenting the latest research into using the subsurface as a civil engineering dimension. The pressure exerted by increasing population, sensitivity toward the environment, and the ever-increasing cost of the land are a few of the reasons that underground excavations are necessary to society's health and future. Excavations below the surface provide space for services, transportation of people and goods, water supply and disposal, sanitation, and storage. These papers offer global examples of practical applications of excavations, especially in China. These papers analyze deep excavations and retaining structures, tunnels and underground excavations, and new frontiers in urban geotechnology.
