Le Grand Rift Africain. À la confluence des temps. De la mer Rouge à l'Afrique australe, le Grand Rift africain, qui s'étend sur plus de 4 000 kilomètres en sillonnant 16 pays, est l'une des plus grandes fractures de l'écorce terrestre. Au-delà de cette curiosité géologique se déploie un territoire surprenant, aux innombrables paysages (savanes, forêts, mangroves, déserts, montagnes, volcans et hauts-plateaux), dans lequel une riche biodiversité interagit, parfois se cache, s'adapte, et évolue. Cette faille de la Terre ouvre la voie à une spirale du temps qui permet aux scientifiques d'avoir accès à des traces remontant aux origines des reliefs, des océans et des espèces. Considéré bien souvent comme le premier des berceaux de l'humanité, le Rift africain forme aussi un espace culturel et politique extraordinairement dynamique, un lieu d'interactions majeures entre sociétés et environnements. Face à ce territoire hors norme où les temps se superposent et se croisent, les scientifiques nous révèlent les multiples facettes de ce système complexe particulièrement sensible aux enjeux contemporains : changement climatique, érosion de la biodiversité, crises sanitaires et politiques. Ce livre aborde le Rift comme un espace exceptionnel d'interdisciplinarité, pour lequel seule la conjugaison de tous nos savoirs au passé, au présent et au futur permet de saisir les évolutions et les liens entre cette formidable diversité de ressources, d'écosystèmes, d'espèces, de cultures et de sociétés. This unique book is dedicated to helping promote geoheritage, geoconservation, and geoparks in Africa and the Middle East. Local, regional, global and thematic case studies including a geoheritage toolkit are used to illustrate the scope and depth of geoheritage and highlight some current geoparks and aspiring candidates in Africa, the Middle East, China , Europe,and Australia. This special issue mainly consists of the proceedings of the First International Conference on Geoparks in Africa and Middle East (FICGAME) held in, El Jadida, Morocco in 2011. The conference, hosted by the Faculty of Sciences of Chouaib Doukkali University, was organized by the African Geoparks Network and the African Association of Women in Geosciences incollaboration with the UNESCO Cairo Office.

"This book describes famous geosites and historical localities in national parks and conservation areas from North America, East Africa, and Europe. The geosites include iconic landforms associated with active volcanoes, canyons, glaciated landscapes, natural rock monoliths, and rifts. The potential for geotourism in historical localities such as the famous Greco-Roman antiquities of Greece, Italy, and Turkey, is emphasized. Some of the geosites and historical localities provide evidence that previous civilizations coped with active geology and major climatic cycles, whilst others reveal evidence of famous geological events recognized in history and ancient mythology that helped shape our current civilization.
