Inspired by the 2019 Bauhaus centennial, Designing for Precarious Citizens links the ideals of the Bauhaus to research by designers and students on the living and housing conditions of vulnerable groups in society today. For the Bauhaus, technology was a tool for reducing the vulnerability of working-class citizens, but in modern society it often prevents people from being able to make decisions about their own future. The various design projects featured here follow on the ideas of architect Johan Niegeman, one of the few Dutch educators at the Bauhaus. The book also includes key research by designers Frank Kolkman, Giuditta Vendrame, and Klasien van de Zandschulp.

The Book of Judith tells the story of a fictitious Jewish woman beheading Holofernes, the general of a powerful army, to free her people. The story has fascinated artists and authors for centuries, and is becoming a major field of research in its own right. The Sword of Judith is the first multidisciplinary collection of essays to discuss representations of Judith throughout the centuries. Bringing together scholars from around the world, it transforms our understanding of Judith's enduring story across a wide range of disciplines. The book includes sections on Judith in Christian, Jewish and secular textual traditions, as well as representations of Judith in art, music and theatre. The collection includes new archival source studies and the translation of unpublished manuscripts and texts previously unavailable in English.

Jahrhundert.

The Old Testament story of the widow Judith--the irresistible siren who lured her people' s deadly enemy, Holofernes, to his death, beheading him in his own bed to save Jerusalem--is an enduring cultural myth in Western society. In this original and provocative book, Margarita Stocker explores the Western fascination with the image of Judith and the abundance of interpretations that have surrounded her at different times between the early Middle Ages and the present day. The myth of Judith provides an important key to modern society' s view of women and power, the book argues. In dealing with the threatening image of a powerful femme fatale who is also a saint, the vested interests of Western culture have deliberately, often deviously, subverted images of sex and death as a way of marginalizing women and protecting traditional notions of masculinity.
