Abstract

Glass is a popular cladding material for modern buildings. The trend for steel-framed, glass-clad buildings instead of those using traditional materials such as brick and concrete has inherent problems. These include, for example, the performance of architectural glass in extreme climatic events such as windstorms and heavy snow loads and also during earthquakes. This book reviews the state-of-the-art in glass and glazing technology to resist failure due to these natural events.Building code seismic requirements for architectural glass in the United States are considered first of all,

Abstract

Themen: Baustoff Glas Verarbeitung und Veredelung Anwendungsbereiche Konstruktionsarten Anschlüsse / Befestigungen Glass Construction is one of the most varied and innovative areas of structural design. Glass connects exterior and interior spaces; at the same time, it protects the interior space from the outside world. Its constructional possibilities go far beyond classical window constructions. Special glasses possess astonishing physical characteristics and can thus be used in varied and creative ways.Topics: Glass as building material Processing and finishing Applications Construction types Connections / Mountings

Abstract

Glass offers a wide variety of possible applications for the realization of even the most ambitious designs in architecture, and in the past two decades it has experienced an unparalleled burst of innovation. For planners, this means working constantly with this high-performance material. In compact and appealing form, the completely revised Glass Construction Manual presents the current state of the art on planning and building with glass, from the history through the technical foundations all the way to the most innovative applications. Astonishing perspectives on thermal insulation and solar protection and the addition of thoughtfully selected new practical examples round off this comprehensive reference work.

Abstract

Flat glass opens up more possibilities for the planner than virtually any other material. Because of the technological complexity of using it, however, no specific structural forms have been developed for glass supporting frameworks as they have been for wood, concrete, and steel. This book is thus the first to present a coherent guide to the planning and design of glass supporting frameworks. The focus is on the pressure-resistant, flat supporting element as a basic building block for broad supporting structures. The spatial and constructive forms of multifunctional, self-supporting glass envelopes are vividly illustrated and systematically explained. The constructions presented exhibit new aesthetic qualities, based not on the dictum of "dematerialization" but on the poetry of gleaming and transparent planes. They ring in a new chapter in the history of glass architecture.

Abstract

Drawing on a number of modern and heritage design projects from Europe, the USA, the Middle East and South East Asia, this book examines the role of 'glass architecture' in the economic and social development of regional towns and local places. The book argues that adopting a more 'global' aesthetic can lead to the destruction of a place's cohesive identity and a discontinuity of heritage with little or no social or economic gain.

Abstract

The concept of tomorrow's towns and cities will be based on new social, economic and technological ideals focused on improving the quality of life. To attain this objective, architects and engineers of today must improve the quality of buildings and establish new principles of building conception. The quality of interior space and the impact of a building on its surroundings depends strongly on the physical interface that separates the outer environment from the inner building space. The conception and realisation of this interface (the envelope) are, therefore, of prime importance.
