Abstract

Any discussion of great cityscape painting starts with Canaletto, whose masterpieces depicting his beloved Venice were the origin of the genre as high art. He was at the peak of his fame, about 1735, when the competed the 38 brilliant views in this book - one of the greatest representations of an 18th-century city in our possession. Canaletto intented the series to be seen in the order in which they are here presented, for together they form a panorama of successive views. In the first 14 scenes, the artist's eye moves in stages down the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge and back again ; in the next 12 he looks at the canal from viewpoints between the Rialto and Sta. Chiara ; and the third group of 12 are scenes of the inimitable campi of Venice, from that of SS. Giovanni e Paolo to the Piazza S. Marco, of which there are two views. Virtually every famous sight of this most picturesque of cities is seen, for later scenic artists borrowed often from Canaletto's concepts. The lucid beauty, sensitivity and accuracy for which he is so admired are at their zenith in this superlative series. No one could add to the graphic perfection of these pictures, but J. G. Links, expert on Venice and scholar of Canaletto, has added to our delight. His introduction and descriptive texts, written for this edition, illuminate art history, Canaletto's work and career, and each scene. He identifies the many well-known landmarks, tells how they are changed today, and supplies material of keen interest about personnages associated with them, from the Doges to Browning, Ruskin James, and all those of note who for centuries have found in Venice inspiration and enchantment.
