Abstract

According to the Semantic Web a formal representation of knowledge is described by an ontology. This formal representation enables a unique identification of elements within an ontology. By the use of natural language for element annotation, ambiguity occurs and a unique element identification based on natural language cannot be guaranteed. This book describes an approach to identify the most relevant element described by a natural language term by reducing the aspect of ambiguity to a minimum.

Abstract

Whilst it is a moot point amongst researchers, linear algebra is an important component in the study of graphs. This book illustrates the elegance and power of matrix techniques in the study of graphs by means of several results, both classical and recent. The emphasis on matrix techniques is greater than other standard references on algebraic graph theory, and the important matrices associated with graphs such as incidence, adjacency and Laplacian matrices are treated in detail. Presenting a useful overview of selected topics in algebraic graph theory, early chapters of the text focus on regular graphs, algebraic connectivity, the distance matrix of a tree, and its generalized version for arbitrary graphs, known as the resistance matrix. Coverage of later topics include Laplacian eigenvalues of threshold graphs, the positive definite completion problem and matrix games based on a graph. Such an extensive coverage of the subject area provides a welcome prompt for further exploration, and the inclusion of exercises enables practical learning throughout the book. It may also be applied to a selection of sub-disciplines within science and engineering. Whilst this book will be invaluable to students and researchers in graph theory and combinatorial matrix theory who want to be acquainted with matrix theoretic ideas used in graph theory, it will also benefit a wider, cross-disciplinary readership.

Abstract

This standard textbook of modern graph theory, now in its fifth edition, combines the authority of a classic with the engaging freshness of style that is the hallmark of active mathematics. It covers the core material of the subject with concise yet reliably complete proofs, while offering glimpses of more advanced methods in each field by one or two deeper results, again with proofs given in full detail. The book can be used as a reliable text for an introductory course, as a graduate text, and for self-study. [Back cover]

Abstract

Current language technology is dominated by approaches that either enumerate a large set of rules, or are focused on a large amount of manually labelled data. The creation of both is time-consuming and expensive, which is commonly thought to be the reason why automated natural language understanding has still not made its way into “real-life” applications yet. This book sets an ambitious goal: to shift the development of language processing systems to a much more automated setting than previous works. A new approach is defined: what if computers analysed large samples of language data on their own, identifying structural regularities that perform the necessary abstractions and generalisations in order to better understand language in the process? After defining the framework of Structure Discovery and shedding light on the nature and the graphic structure of natural language data, several procedures are described that do exactly this: let the computer discover structures without supervision in order to boost the performance of language technology applications. Here, multilingual documents are sorted by language, word classes are identified, and semantic ambiguities are discovered and resolved without using a dictionary or other explicit human input. The book concludes with an outlook on the possibilities implied by this paradigm and sets the methods in perspective to human computer interaction. The target audience are academics on all levels (undergraduate and graduate students, lecturers and professors) working in the fields of natural language processing and computational linguistics, as well as natural language engineers who are seeking to improve their systems.  .

Abstract

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Graph Structures for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, GKR 2013, held in Beijing, China, in August 2013, associated with IJCAI 2013, the 23rd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The 12 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers feature current research involved in the development and application of graph-based knowledge representation formalisms and reasoning techniques. They address the following topics: representations of constraint satisfaction problems; formal concept analysis; conceptual graphs; and argumentation frameworks.
