Abstract

Examining the 1930s and the different reactions to the crisis, this volume offers a global comparative perspective that includes a comparison across time to give insight into the contemporary global recession. Germany, Italy, Austria and Spain with their antidemocratic, authoritarian or fascistic answers to the economic crisis are compared not only to an opposite European perspective - the Swedish example - but also to other global perspectives and their political consequences in Japan, China, India, Turkey, Brazil and the United States. The book offers no recipe for economic, social or polit

Abstract

The global financial crisis and the ensuing Great Recession raised concerns about adjustment fatigue, deflation, currency wars, and secular stagnation that presented a sense of deja vu: similar concerns had arisen at the time of the Great Depression and at the end of World War II. As with earlier crises, these concerns prompted calls for greater international policy cooperation-both to achieve a sustainable recovery from the crisis and to prevent future crises. This volume compiles papers from a 2015 symposium of eminent scholars convened by the IMF to discuss how history can inform current debates about the functioning and challenges of the international monetary system. An introductory chapter sets the stage for the other chapters in the volume by giving a broad overview of the performance of the international monetary system over the past century, highlighting the key events and challenges that shaped it. Subsequent sections look at historical antecedents of today's challenges, describe how the modern international monetary system has been-and continues to be-shaped through international financial diplomacy, provide a present-day perspective, and examine the analytics of international policy coordination.

Abstract

The causes and consequences of the Great Depression have been the subject of a vast profusion of literature within the field of macroeconomics. In this timely three-volume collection, Randall Parker brings together the most authoritative works written by some of the leading experts in this field. The first volume gives a comprehensive overview of the build-up and immediate aftermath of the initial stages of the Depression while the second volume provides the reader with detailed analyses of the monetary and financial reasons behind this economic catastrophe. The third volume charts the vital research undertaken on the operation of the interwar gold standard, which has deepened our understanding of the Depression and its international character and concludes with an investigation into the economic recovery and the New Deal. This important and highly relevant collection, along with an original introduction by the editor, will be an invaluable reference tool for students, scholars and practitioners with an interest in the economic aspects of the Great Depression.
