"This book considers the nature of lines and assemblies of lines, including stripes and grids, as well as related phenomena such as checks, tilings and patterns, regular and irregular, repeating and non-repeating, in urban and rural environments, at the macro and micro levels, in land- and cityscapes, buildings, and other designed constructions, compositions and objects. Considered conventionally, checks, periodic tilings and regular patterns owe their compositional arrangements to an order imposed by an underlying grid structure. The intention in this book is to analyze, explain and illustrate the nature of each design type, to identify the structural (or geometric) similarities between each and to show how the manipulation of various underlying grid structures can provide innovative compositional frameworks for artists and designers. The discussion is richly illustrated with 400 black and white images and an 8 page colour section"--

Artistes représentés : Carl Andre, Claudia Andujar, Christian Boltanski, Analívia Cordeiro, Michael Ensdorf, Esther Ferrer, Douglas Huebler, On Kawara, Sherrie Levine, Sol LeWitt, Jacques Lizène, Verena Loewensberg, Vera Molnár, François Morellet, Dennis Oppenheim, Gina Pane, Rosemarie Trockel.

From the late sixteenth century until around 1800, new ideas and practices of urban planning and the implementation of public buildings, water works and fortifications from the Low Countries were disseminated across Europe and America. Engineers, mathematicians and other scientists in the Low Countries applied methods of design and land surveying that were gradually assimilated and often modified following exchanges within local practice. In some cases, models were projected onto the existing situation. This phenomenon of disseminating and exchanging theoretical models and practical methods between the Low Countries, Europe and its colonies during this period developed into a new Early Modern Urbanism movement within the Western world.
