Theodore Evergates has assembled, translated, and annotated some two hundred documents from the country of Champagne into a sourcebook that focuses on the political, economic, and legal workings of a feudal society, uncovering the details of private life and social history that are embedded in the official records.

Apparue progressivement dans les milieux de l'écrit depuis le XIe siècle, la signature est adoptée par les souverains et les princes de l'Europe occidentale à partir du XIVe siècle. À la fois signe de validation et emblème royal, elle livre de précieuses informations sur l'exercice du pouvoir au Moyen Âge. À l'origine exclusivement autographe, la signature royale est alors une véritable épiphanie du pouvoir sur le papier ou le parchemin. Dans le contexte troublé de la guerre de Cent Ans, elle participe du conflit entre les rois de France et d'Angleterre en s'invitant dans leur arsenal symbolique. Au XVe siècle, les milieux du pouvoir l'érigent en signe de validation à part entière, qui se démultiplie sur les documents; elle perd son caractère autographe et se voit reproduite autant que de besoin par des secrétaires de confiance. L'évolution de son usage renseigne ainsi sur la représentation du roi et de la royauté, et le rôle de l'écrit dans la pratique du pouvoir.À partir d'un corpus large et inédit, croisant les ressources des grandes institutions patrimoniales et des dépouillements en région, cet ouvrage aborde pour la première fois la signature médiévale sous l'angle de l'histoire, de la diplomatique et de la symbolique.
