Japan-based Go Hasegawa has found himself increasingly in the spotlight in recent years, a much sought-after younger architect who has built a career through his intensive inquiry on our perception of space, gravity, and time. He challenges pre-existing ideas on largeness/smallness, heaviness/lightness, and newness/oldness, seeking values not previously recognized. His work has explored several building types in addition to the houses for which he is known. This issue gives an in-depth look at Hasegawa’s practice, featuring apartments in Okachimachi, a gazebo in Shanghai, an iced coffee shop in Tokyo, a chapel in Guastalla, a townhouse in Asakusa, and other works.

What role can history play in contemporary architecture practice? Besides, History: Go Hasegawa, Kersten Geers, David Van Severen invites three architects to reread, redraw, translate, and appropriate from the past and from each other in order to construct relationships between and meanings out of a constellation of references. In their conversations, history becomes a tool that can be used in production, rather than just an object of study. The book features newly produced plans, sections, models, and perspectives for projects by Go Hasegawa and OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, juxtaposed with reference material chosen from the CCA Collection. Introduced and annotated by the architects, these images form a visual manifesto for a unique relationship to history.

The two editors, graduate architects from the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture asked six renowned architects and four well-known artists, all among the latest generation in their field, about their underlying motivation, orientation and stances with respect to architecture and art. The result is inspiring, in-depth reflection, enhanced by quotes, symbolic images and presentations of real projects from the world of architecture and art that underline and symbolize their ideas and reflections. Interviews with the architects Kersten Geers (Office KGDVS, Brussels), François Charbonnet (Made in, Geneva), Go Hasegawa (Tokyo), Anne Holtrop (Bahrain and Amsterdam), Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara (DOGMA, Brussels and London), Junya Ishigami (Tokyo) and the artists Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine (film-makers, Paris), Philipp Schaerer (Zurich and Steffisburg), Yuri Ancarani (visual artist and film-maker, Milan), Bas Princen (photographer, Zurich and Rotterdam).

Now as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and the western world. This publication provides an overview of its many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions. The publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki. Six essays by European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making cross-references to Japan’s architectural history, and explaining current lines of development. The book thus combines a self-reflective approach with an outsider’s analytical view.
