La renommée des grandes maisons de couture françaises et du « savoir-faire à la française » n'est plus à faire : Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint-Laurent, etc. Autant de noms que chacune et chacun a entendu prononcés des milliers de fois. Ce que l'on connait moins, en revanche, ce sont les réalités de travail et les coulisses d'une industrie dont on sait pourtant, sans vraiment s'y intéresser davantage, qu'elle a reposé et repose encore sur des « petites mains ». Mais qui étaient-elles ? Des midinettes de la Grande Guerre aux mouvements de mobilisation de la Libération, d'où venaient ces ouvrières ? Quel était leur travail ? Où vivaient-elles ? Dans quelles conditions matérielles ? Avec quels loisirs, et quelles aspirations ? En nous invitant à la rencontre, basée sur les archives, de ces ouvrières d'excellence, Sophie Kurkdjian et Sandrine Tinturier donnent à voir un univers inconnu et souvent étonnant. Dans cette histoire sociale des ouvrières de la mode se mêlent ainsi histoire sociale d'une profession précocement syndicalisée et combattive, histoire des techniques, et histoire culturelle d'un des fleurons de l'image du pays à l'étranger.
