La correspondance de Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687) est la dernière correspondance inédite de l'âge classique entre Galilée et Newton. Etabli à Dantzig (Gdansk), Hevelius a correspondu avec les principaux savants du XVIIe siècle : Gassendi, Mersenne, Huygens, Oldenburg, Boulliau, Wallis, Des Noyers, Lubienicki, Hartlib. Ces lettres réflètent au jour le jour la création de la "nouvelle science" et traitent des grands débats cosmologiques du XVIIe siècle : les comètes, la Lune, le Soleil, la carte du Ciel, le perfectionnement des instruments, les rapports entre l'astrologie et la politique. La vie de l'auteur, la constitution du corpus de lettres, sa mutilation par le fameux Libri, la redécouverte des pièces perdues, l'inventaire chronologique de la correspondance posent autant de problèmes critiques qui sont ici traités en détail, en prolégomènes à l'édition.
