Ce colloque qui termine le programme ANR ATHIS (Ateliers Histoire et Informatique) emprunte son titre à Marc Bloch, maître autant que modèle et inspirateur pour les historiens du XXIe siècle. Plus de 35 ans après la tenue du premier colloque sur l’histoire et l’informatique tenu à l’École Française de Rome en 1975, il fait le bilan de six ateliers qui, réunis depuis 2006, se sont efforcés de faire le point sur les évolutions récentes de l’informatique et de leur impact sur le métier d’historien. C’est aussi un regard porté vers l’avenir, pointant, à partir de l’expérience acquise, les grandes lignes d’une évolution prévisible, afin d’inciter l’historien à tirer le meilleur profit de ces transformations pour réinventer sa pratique scientifique de chercheur et ses méthodes didactiques d’enseignant. Dépendant de ses sources et de sa capacité à les comprendre et à les interpréter, placé à la charnière des sciences humaines et des sciences sociales, l’historien doit en effet exploiter les opportunités que lui offre un outil informatique dont l’usage non informé n’est pas sans risque. Les problèmes abordés dans ce volume concernent le traitement des sources, qu’il s’agisse de l’édition critique ou de l’accès aux collections des bibliothèques et des archives, mais couvre aussi des domaines qui vont de l’archéologie et du développement de l’édition électronique à l’enseignement de l’histoire et aux marges disciplinaires de l’histoire, l’informatique favorisant les transferts de méthodes et de problématiques d’une science à l’autre (par exemple la linguistique, avec la textométrie, ou la géographie, avec la cartographie informatisée et l’analyse spatiale). Sont aussi abordés ici les apports – et les dangers – de l’internet et d’un Web 2.0 dont certains protagonistes vont jusqu’à proposer une « histoire sans les historiens ». D’une communication à l’autre, résonne la préoccupation majeure des historiens : comment pleinement utiliser l’informatique et ses prodigieuses ressources tout en préservant la liberté intellectuelle et la rigueur scientifique de l’historien, dans un univers où les contraintes, notamment économiques, pèsent d’un poids inconnu jusqu’ici.

"Writing History in the Digital Age began as a one-month experiment in October 2010, featuring chapter-length essays by a wide array of scholars with the goal of rethinking traditional practices of researching, writing, and publishing, and the broader implications of digital technology for the historical profession. The essays and discussion topics were posted on a WordPress platform with a special plug-in that allowed readers to add paragraph-level comments in the margins, transforming the work into socially networked texts. This first installment drew an enthusiastic audience, over 50 comments on the texts, and over 1,000 unique visitors to the site from across the globe, with many who stayed on the site for a significant period of time to read the work. To facilitate this new volume, Jack Dougherty and Kristen Nawrotzki designed a born-digital, open-access platform to capture reader comments on drafts and shape the book as it developed. Following a period of open peer review and discussion, the finished product now presents 20 essays from a wide array of notable scholars, each examining (and then breaking apart and reexamining) how digital and emergent technologies have changed the ways that historians think, teach, author, and publish"--
