C'est dans les années 70 que Jacob Holdt décide de traverser les Etats-Unis avec seulement quarante dollars en poche. A la fois fasciné et terrifié par ce pays (alors en pleine guerre du Vietnam), le jeune homme, qui devait juste y passer quelques jours, y vagabonde pendant cinq années. Années d'errance sur les routes de cet immense territoire, à pied ou en stop, comme un vrai routard. De ce périple, il relate ses errements et ses découvertes dans des lettres adressées à son père pasteur. Sceptique, ce dernier, qui a du mal à croire que le Nouveau Monde puisse engendrer tant de misère sociale, de dénuement et de violence, lui enverra un petit appareil photo afin qu'il témoigne. Rentré au Danemark en 1976, Jacob Holdt organise des projections de ses diapositives, qui rencontrent un grand succès, lui assurent une existence médiatique et le conduisent à publier, en 1978, American Pictures, best-seller illustré de sept cents photographies. Les images frappent par leur crudité, leur étonnante simplicité et, en même temps, la dimension spirituelle qu'elles dégagent, le constat sans détour de la banalité du mal et de la misère. Drawing from such disciplines as anthropology, sociology, economics, art criticism, and travel writing, Universal Experience is both a sizeable illustrated catalogue of the exhibition at the MCA, Chicago and a companion to the experience of contemporary travel and tourism. This volume draws on the proliferation of research surrounding the social, geographic, and cultural dimensions of mobility and outputs this information as an anthology of articles, essays, and excerpts. The primary focus of the exhibition, however, is on artworks created by a group of international visual artists who create work in response to travel among multiple cultures--both high and low, and local and foreign. While serving as a "travel guide" to the latest sociological and political research and commentary on tourism and travel, Universal Experience also features a compelling mix of text and more than 170 images in an engaging format that will appeal to high scholars and popular audiences alike. Artists range from well knowns like Rem Koolhaas, Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci, Jeff Koons, and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, to emerging artists such as Franz Ackermann, Mathias Muller, Shirana Shahbazi, Yukata Sone, Pascale Marthine Tayou, and Pi tr Uklanski. Complimenting and illuminating the works of these artists is a collection of written works by Francesco Bonami, Carol Becker, Alain de Boton, Nancy Specter, Susan Sontag, Lucy Lippard, Robert Fitzpatrick and others.

The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility and freedom, discovery and escapea place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in lit­erature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium: from images by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Berenice Abbott to Robert Franks seminal 1950s odyssey, The Americans. From Stephen Shore to Ryan McGinley, hundreds of other photographers have continued the tradition. The Open Road is the first book to explore the photographic road trip as a genre. It opens with a comprehensive introduction, which traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the early 1900s to present day. Each chapter explores one body of work in depth through informative texts and a portfolio of images, beginning with Robert Frank, and including such renowned work as Garry Winogrands 1964, Joel Sternfelds American Prospects, William Egglestons Los Alamos, and Alec Soths Sleeping by the Mississippi. The Open Road is a visual tour-de-force, pres­enting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse.
