Williram, von 1048 bis zu seinem Tod 1085 Abt des Benediktinerklosters im bayerischen Ebersberg, schrieb um das Jahr 1060 im Geist der monastischen Reaktion auf die Frühscholastik einen Kommentar zum Hohen Lied Salomos. Das Werk bot die Auslegung des biblischen Textes sowohl in lateinischen Hexametern als auch in einer deutsch-lateinischen Mischprosa; es wurde ein Erfolg, wie die 45 bis heute erhaltenen Handschriften des 11. bis 16. Jahrhunderts, zu denen noch ein Druck von 1528 kommt, bezeugen. Diese Überlieferung wurde vor allem von den Editoren Joseph Seemüller und Erminnie H. Bartelmez sowie von Paul Pietsch und Willy Sanders untersucht; dabei wurde klar, dass sich in den Textvarianten mehrere Fassungen abzeichnen, die auf Williram selbst zurückgehen. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist es, auf der Grundlage der gesamten Überlieferung dieses Ergebnis zu präzisieren. Es zeigt sich, dass Williram seinen Text sukzessive verbesserte; die Verbesserungen nahm er wahrscheinlich in einem Handexemplar vor, das er abschreiben ließ, wenn er um ein Exemplar des Kommentars gebeten wurde. So brachte er nacheinander acht Fassungen in Umlauf. Jede Fassung wird von einer Gruppe von Handschriften überliefert, deren Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse untersucht und in einem Stemma dargestellt werden. Die Ebersberger Handschrift (cgm 10) kann als Textzeuge einer "Ausgabe letzter Hand" erwiesen werden.
