Rights advocacy has become a prominent facet of South Korea’s increasingly transnational motion picture output, especially following the 1998 presidential inauguration of Kim Dae-jung, a former political prisoner and victim of human rights abuses who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000. Today it is not unusual to see a big-budget production about the pursuit of social justice or the protection of civil liberties contending for the top spot at the box office. With that cultural shift has come a diversification of film subjects, which range from undocumented workers’ rights to the sexual harassment experienced by women to high-school bullying to the struggles among people with disabilities to gain inclusion within a society that has transformed significantly since winning democratic freedoms three decades ago. Combining in-depth textual analyses of films such as Bleak Night, Okja, Planet of Snail, Repatriation, and Silenced with broader historical contextualization, Movie Minorities offers the first English-language study of South Korean cinema’s role in helping to galvanize activist social movements across several identity-based categories.

Broken Spirits gaat over mensen die ernstig beschadigd zijn door oorlog, vervolging, marteling en gedwongen migratie. Wereldwijd gaat het om ongeveer 40 miljoen mensen. In dit boek beschrijven ongeveer 50 experts uit verschillende disciplines en landen de theorie en de praktijk van de hulpverlening aan asielzoekers en vluchtelingen. Het boek bevat 25 hoofdstukken, ondergebracht in 7 delen. Het eerste deel behandelt belangrijke theoretische en conceptuele onderwerpen, zoals de gevolgen van gedwongen migratie, marteling, politiek geweld en aanpassing aan een nieuwe cultuur op de geestelijke gezondheid van mensen. Deel twee gaat over de gevolgen van psychotrauma's voor het individu en het appèl daarvan op de westerse geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Het volgende deel is gewijd aan verschillende vormen van verbale therapieën. Daarna volgt een deel over de non-verbale therapieën waarin met name de psychomotorische therapie, lichaamsgerichte therapie, creatieve therapie en muziektherapie worden behandeld. Deel 5 richt zich op groepen die extra kwetsbaar zijn voor psychotrauma's, in het bijzonder kinderen, adolescenten en vrouwen. Deel 6 handelt over de mogelijkheden voor psychofarmacologische interventies, over de omgang met medisch- somatische problemen die het gevolg zijn van martelingen en over wegen om te komen tot psychosociale rehabilitatie van patiënten met posttraumatische stressstoornissen.
