Die Herausforderung religionsgeschichtlicher Forschung besteht darin, die Erschließung von Quellen in ihren Kontexten und ihre theoriegeleitete Erklärung mit einer historisch-kritischen Reflexion der Wissensproduktion selbst zu verknüpfen. Die Reihe Religionsgeschichtliche Versuche und Vorarbeiten (RGVV) will dieser Komplementarität von historischer Kontextualisierung, theoretischer Verdichtung und disziplinärer Positionierung Rechnung tragen. Studien zu kulturspezifischen Sachzusammenhängen stehen neben vergleichenden Arbeiten, in Form von Monographien oder thematisch fokussierten Sammelbänden.

Cet essai de René Girard présente et résume les concepts clés de sa théorie : le désir mimétique, le mécanisme victimaire et la révélation judéo-chrétienne. Comparant l'histoire de Milomaki, héros des Indiens yahunas, avec la légende d'Oedipe et les textes de persécution du Moyen Age, l'auteur démontre l'origine persécutrice de tous les mythes et l'universalité du phénomène du bouc émissaire. Pour la seule fois dans toute son oeuvre, René Girard débat ensuite avec trois anthropologues : Walter Burkert, Renato Rosaldo et Jonathan Z Smith. Human sacrifice has fascinated Western writers since the beginnings of European literature. It is prominent in Greek epic and tragedy, and returned to haunt writers after the discovery of the Aztec mass sacrifices. It has been treated by some of the greatest creative geniuses, including Shakespeare and Wagner, and was a major topic in the works of many Modernists, such as D. H. Lawrence and Stravinsky. In literature, human sacrifice is often used to express a writer's reaction to the residue of barbarism in his own culture. The meaning attached to the theme therefore changes profoundly from one period to another, yet it remains as timely an image of cultural collapse as it did over two thousand years ago. Drawing on sources from literature and music, Derek Hughes examines the representation of human sacrifice in Western culture from the Iliad to the invasion of Iraq.
