Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a naturalist, explorer and philanthropist now well known for his multidisciplinary approach to science. First published in English in 1873, this two-volume biography was translated from the German edition of 1872, edited by Karl Bruhns, which had been compiled in commemoration of the centenary of Humboldt's birth. Incorporating numerous extracts of Humboldt's own warmly written letters and anecdotes from his many acquaintances, it charts his travels in South America, Asia and Europe. Volume 2 covers his later life, exploring his impecunious period in Paris at the École Polytechnique, where he shared rooms with the famous French chemist Gay-Lussac, and later, his close association with King Frederick William IV of Prussia. L'objet de ce livre est d'aborder les frères Humboldt comme une fratrie, de souligner leur complémentarité et de mettre en évidence leur insertion dans une sociabilité savante européenne. On attribue à Wilhelm la fondation de l'université de Berlin, à Alexander la promotion d'un système de recherche scientifique qui se perpétue dans les actions de la fondation qui porte son nom. Le domaine de Wilhelm est la linguistique et la philosophie du langage : ayant écrit en allemand une œuvre composée de textes brefs, il a joui d'une notoriété qui, dans un premier temps au moins, est restée cantonnée à l'Allemagne avant de féconder à travers le monde la pensée des anthropologues. Alexander, qui a largement fait usage de la langue française, et dont le long séjour à Paris est lié à la rédaction de son grand œuvre, s'inscrit d'emblée dans une histoire internationale des savoirs. Ils sont au centre de toute l'histoire des sciences humaines en Europe.
