Abstract

"The principal papers on termination have been written by psychoanalysts. The ideas and clinical phenomena presented in this work have principal application and reference to a psycho-analytically oriented psychotherapy with schizophrenic and borderline patients and those having so-called behavior and character disorders, in whom immaturity and varying degrees of impaired ego function are prominent features. Such psychotherapy with such patients, for whom classical psychoanalysis as treatment is not necessarily indicated, constitutes the major effort of most psychiatrists; and this fact perhaps justifies the existence of an additional paper on this subject. In addition, this work represents an attempt to render some experiences associated with termination in intensive psychotherapy--to describe, so to speak, the topography of the process in, it is hoped, an artful and vivid manner--and in sharing these experiences with others to make a start toward deriving our ideas about termination from an actual study of the experience itself rather than from a priori standards and theoretical criteria. In the following chapters, the experience of termination will be considered, first, as a universal human experience to which the therapist must be open in order to understand its impact upon himself and the patient encountering separation and loss in therapy; and second, as an experience which has specific significance in therapy, in which many themes in the individual patient's life, in his character, and in the work of therapy, come together and find resolution"--
