This hardback reprint combines two El Croquis issues dedicated to the Indian architecture firm founded by Bijoy Jain. It takes stock of Studio Mumbai’s most recognised works spanning 2003-2019. The monograph features the Studio Mumbai Work-Place in Nagaon, the Casa Tara in Kashid, the Leti 360 Resort in Leti, and the Palmyra House in Nandgaon. It then revisits more recent works such as Copper House II, the Ahmedabad Residence, and the Ganga Maki Textile Studio in the Himalayan foothills. Jain and his team of architects, engineers, carpenters, and masons excel in blending Indian and Western cultures, as seen in the thatched MPavilion 2016 in Melbourne.

The workshop of Studio Mumbai, headed by Bijoy Jain, consists of open air spaces in a rustic setting surrounded by trees. There, a variety of skilled craftsmen, architects and engineers collaborate in the same space, engaging in, exercising and practicing architecture in a manner that aspires to transcend its own physicality. In this way, the process and act of communication has come to characterise the studio, its creative process and its output. An intimate look at the workings, outlook and inspiration of the practice is given, which includes the story of its background and setting, along with an interview with Jain and detailed profiles of significant projects in India: Tara House, Leti 360 Resort, House on Pali Hill and the Copper House, to name a few.

Catalogue published in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Work-Place’ produced for the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010. Studio Mumbai is composed of a few architects and nearly a hundred craftsmen – carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians, and stonecutters – all working full time. Their work is based on a constant dialogue: “In India, a country with a population of 1,2 billion, the majority of construction is carried out without architects, which does not prevent them from being human in the largest sense. This reflection also forms part of one of our work’s most critical aspect…” reveals Bijoy Jain, the founder of Studio Mumbai. The Studio is a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly. Livre en ligne : http://issuu.com/archizoom/docs/studio_mumbai/23?e=3753097/2912493.

Studio Mumbai is a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly. Gathered through time, this group shares an environment created from an iterative process, where ideas are explored through the production of large-scale mock-ups, models, material studies, sketches and drawings. Projects are developed through careful consideration of place and a practice that draws from traditional skills, local building techniques, materials and an ingenuity arising from limited resources. The practice was started in 1995 by Bijoy Jain. Projects include the Studio Mumbai Work-Place in Nagaon, the Casa Tara in Kashid, the Leti 360 Resort in Leti, the Palmyra House in Nandgaon. Excerpts from a dialogue between Dr. Balkrishna V. Doshi and Bijoy Jain and an essay by Peter Wilson.
