Abstract

Jewish Prayer Texts from the Cairo Genizah , which sets a new tone for future studies, consists of a selection of transcribed and translated Genizah fragments that contain some of the earliest known texts of rabbinic prayers. Reif describes in detail the physical makeup of each manuscript and assesses the manner in which the scribe has tackled the matter of recording a preferred version. He then places the prayer texts included in the manuscript within the context of Jewish liturgical history, explaining the degree to which they were innovative and whether they established precedents to be followed in later prayer-books. He offers specialists and more general readers a fresh understanding of the historical, theological, linguistic, and social factors that may have motivated adjustments to their liturgical formulations.

Abstract

Studying responsa fragments from the Cairo Genizah, one travels through a virtual time machine of Jewish history, discovering the rich facets of private and public Jewish medieval life. From the cradle to the coffin, responsa regulate domestic affairs and reflect all manner of human merits, convictions and flaws. Many responsa contain real-life accounts of household intrigue, infidelity, solemn oaths, and sibling rivalry. Seride Teshuvot is a descriptive catalogue of responsa fragments from the Jacques Mosseri Genizah Collection at Cambridge University Library. This book includes descriptions of seventy-five fragments from the classical Genizah Period (10th–13th century) until the late Genizah Period (18th century), on matters of halakha, and biblical and talmudic exegesis. These responsa offer fertile ground for research in all manner of disciplines, from the medieval interpretation of Jewish law to the wider social, cultural and legal history of the Jewish communities of the Mediterranean and Near East. 'The resources invested in this catalogue are impressive, and it is a welcome addition to the few existing catalogues of Genizah manuscripts.' Pinchas Roth, Tikvah Scholar at the NYU Tikvah Center

Abstract

This volume contains a study of multiglossia in Judeo-Arabic in addition to a critical edition, annotated translation, and a cultural and a grammatical study of The Purim Scroll of the Cairene Jewish Community , written in 1524 to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews of Cairo from Ahmad Pasha, the governor of Egypt. 'Multiglossia' is a linguistic state in which different varieties of a language exist side by side in a language community and are used under different circumstances or with various functions. 'Judeo-Arabic' has been written and spoken in various forms by Jews throughout the Arabic-speaking world. Part One places the language of the Judeo-Arabic text of the Scroll within the multiglossic history of Judeo-Arabic. Part Two introduces the two critical editions of the Scroll, both in Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic, with the variant readings followed by an annotated translation. Part Three presents a detailed grammar of the Scroll using the framework of Judeo-Arabic multiglossia.
