Abstract

In the Second Industrial Revolution, the service sector starts growing significantly. At the end of the 19th century, the number of employees in banking, trade, industry, and insurance increases. The rationalization of these enterprises creates a specialized and at the same time universal space that becomes the operative heart of both private business and public administration: in the office, machines, furniture, and people come together - form and function unite. The contributions to this volume show the office as a space of rationalization and of the imaginary, which is considered »life's actual center of gravity« (Walter Benjamin), the center of administrative and social life.

Abstract

Englich and Remmers provide a comprehensive, analytical, and programmatic introduction to face-to-face communication in the work world. Against the backdrop of globalization, with its dynamic transformations of office environments and worldwide digital networks, they analyze the strategic significance of the various communication processes for organizational and corporate development. They show how the motives and aims of communication, the organizational forms and procedures appropriate in a given case, the size and arrangement of spaces, the required capabilities of furniture and furnishings, and modern communications and media technology all condition and influence one another. Their integrated and user-oriented approach to analysis and planning enables architects, interior designers, and facility managers to foster communication processes, structure them sensibly, and avoid unnecessary friction and needless follow-up costs, all through proper planning. Abstract

WorkScape reveals how trailblazing companies from around the world are redefining where we work and how we work together. The book showcases office spaces by innovators such as Facebook, Google, YouTube, Monocle, KPMG, Red Bull, and Urban Outfitters that promote new forms of work, creativity, and collaboration. In addition to presenting architecture and interior design, WorkScape also explores more unconventional parameters that can make going to and being at work more attractive and satisfying. The forward-thinking offers featured here include company-run childcare facilities, bike share programs, communal vegetable gardens, and fully equipped health and wellness facilities. In WorkScape, office environments from global players are shown alongside compelling examples from smaller enterprises, temporary ventures, and freelance endeavors that all shake off the cubicle culture of the past. The book’s careful pairing of stunning images with in-depth project descriptions and detailed floor plans make it an invaluable reference for anyone looking to redefine their workplaces, impress their partners and clients, and inspire their staff to think outside the box.
