Abstract

The aim to live in a mini house can have various reasons: For many it stands for a better, more livable existence on the basis of what is necessary, possible and desired, making one’s life easier, more economical and more sustainable. The limitation of the floor space promotes concentration on the essentials in order to integrate what one needs for life. With well thought-out planning, cleverly organized floor plans and intelligent, compact concepts, a lot of space can be created in a small area. By now, in addition to do-it-yourself protagonists, established architects and hip design studios have taken on the interesting task of developing sophisticated solutions for small homes and tiny houses. This volume presents very different projects in terms of architectural style, construction method and interior design.

Abstract

Abstract

Waiting shelters, kiosks, market stalls, bus stops, call boxes, toilets, advertising columns, ticket booths, portable tents or housing units, emergency housing, tourist information - the list of small, self-contained, functional constructions has almost no end. One finds them on the nearest street corner, yet rarely awake architectural interest. Instead of gazing at the big, architectural attractions, a lot of potential for architects is hidden in the quality assurance of the everyday design of these small and sometimes positively charming necessities. Because these small constructions often stand directly in the area of conflict between architecture and product design, this addition to the in DETAIL series was created to span the gap between both professions. http://www.detail.de/rw_5_Kaufen_En2_HoleArtikelID_942_ArtikelDetails.htm

Abstract

Over the years, talented architects have occasionally indulged themselves with the challenge of designing small but perfectly formed buildings. Today, with reduced budgets, many architects have turned in a more focused way to creating works that may be in diminutive in their dimensions, but which are definitely big when it comes to trendsetting ideas. Whether in Japanese cities, where large sites are hard to come by, or at the frontier between art and architecture, small buildings present many advantages, and push their designers to do more with less. A dollhouse for Calvin Klein in New York, a playhouse for children in Trondheim, pop-up stores for fashion stars, vacation cabins, or housing for victims of natural disasters are all part of the new rush to develop the great small architecture of the moment. The 2013 Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito is here, but so are emergent architects from Portugal, Chile, England, and New Zealand. Alvaro Siza and Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA) display their eye for tiny detail alongside artists Doug Aitken and Olafur Eliasson. From world-famous names to the freshest new talent, come discover architectural invention on a whole new, small scale.
