Emma Kunz (1892-1963) was a Swiss healer and artist. Born to a family of weavers, her abilities of telepathy, prophecy, and as a healer became evident early in life and she began to exercise her divining pendulum as a young adult. Although never formally trained in art, in 1938 she also began to produce large-scale, delicate geometric drawings using her divining pendulum. With her work based on the questions she encountered and the visions she had, Kunz proved to be an accomplished and even visionary artist. Fascination with Kunz's art has never been greater than it is today. Living a secluded life, far from any art scene, the works she created eighty years ago exemplify what we now take for granted: an expanded concept of creativity that rejects the question of art versus non-art and incorporates a wide range of topics: research, medicine, nature, as well as supernatural, magical, animistic, and visionary elements. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Aargauer Kunsthaus in Switzerland, where the first-ever public display of Emma Kunz's drawings was staged in 1973, this book sets her drawings and activities as a healer in dialogue with the work and positions of contemporary artists such as Agnieszka Brzezanþska, Joachim Koester, Goshka Macuga, Shana Moulton, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Mai-Thu Perret. Alongside some 120 illustrations, mostly in color, the book features essays on spirituality and esotericism in contemporary art as well as interviews with the artists mentioned. An innovative exhibition tour via 3-D laser scan technology completes the book. Exhibition: Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, Switzerland (23.01. - 24.05.2021).

"Abstract paintings were being produced even before Kandinsky. Completely independently from each other, Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884) in England, Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) in Sweden and Emma Kunz (1892-1963) in Switzerland developed an individual, abstract pictorial language. What they had in common was a desire to make visible the laws of nature, the intellect and the supernatural. Their works are being presented side by side for the first time in an exhibition. The three women artists all found their artistic language within the context of the spiritual movements of their times: Houghton in spiritism, af Klint in theosophy and Kunz in naturopathy. Their artworks bear witness to a 'mediumistic' praxis: Houghton and af Klint were inspired by higher beings to paint, while Kunz developed her drawings with the help of a pendulum. Catherine De Zegher is directeur van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten te Gent, maar voordien werkte zij overal ter wereld als curator van tentoonstellingen, zoals “Inside the visible” en “Persistent Vestiges”. In deze reeks essays levert ze een bijdrage voor ons begrip van kunst, meer bepaald met de artistieke expressie van een aantal kunstenaressen waar ze de voorbije jaren mee samenwerkte. Er gaat veel aandacht uit naar de totstandkoming en esthetische praktijken, en ze legt ook de politiek-historische context bloot die aan de grondslag van een bepaald werk ligt. Het unieke van elke artiest en elk project is dan ook van groot belang. De invloed van het feminisme en daaraan gekoppelde intellectuele revolutie van de jaren 60 tot in de jaren 80 leidde tot nieuwe kunstuitingen (o.m. body art, performance, media en bewegende beelden, conceptkunst, gebruik van audiovisuele elementen).
