Dans cette étude, nous répondons à la question: «Comment, d'après ce qu'on peut observer dans les chartes écrites en français à Liège avant 1292, la ponctuation interagit-elle avec la syntaxe dans la langue française médiévale?» D'abord, nous définissons les concepts mobilisés. Le terme ponctogramme («signe de ponctuation») est défini selon une approche spatiale de l'écriture et nous définissons la syntaxe sur la base de la notion de relation minimale (Lemaréchal). Partant du lien sémantique entre les constituants, nous étudions comment ce lien est grammaticalement spécifié. L'analyse s'appuie ensuite sur la statistique. Les relations liant constructions et présence de ponctuation sont évaluées. Il en ressort une liste de structures attirant le marquage (p. ex.: phrases, circonstants) ou le rejetant (p. ex.: prédicats, relateurs). La ponctuation n'était pas obligatoire, mais sa présence était due au contexte syntaxique. L'étude de la forme des signes révèle un ‹·› très fréquent, les autres formes étant plus spécifiques à certaines constructions (p. ex.: circonstants): les scribes n'employaient pas indifféremment les signes.
