This work deals with intertextual theories and investigates narrative texts (by Wieland, Novalis, Chamisso, Storm, Andersen and Thomas Mann) from the Enlightenment of the 18th century to Classical Modernism of the early 20th century. In addition to the fairytale requisites, the less obvious fairytale-like text structures, which show a connection between different literary genres (novella/novel and fairytale) and a confrontation between the fairytale-like and the fictitious-realistic, will also be examined. The relationship between the writing process of fairytale adaptation and literary modernity - a literary modernity that reflects a social modernity characterized by its social ambivalence and plurality (modernity as a macro epoch after Anke Lohmeier and Dirk von Petersdorff) - will be shown. The six narrative texts - Die Abentheuer des Don Sylvio von Rosalva, Die Lehrlinge zu Sais, Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte, Der Schimmelreiter, Peer im Glück (as an excursion and outlook into contemporary European literature) and Königliche Hoheit - with their diversity of layers of meaning are regarded as modern narrative texts and represent various milestones in the development of the concept of modernity.

This study examines the form and reception of mystical writing in poetry by Anna de Noailles (France, 1876–1933), Ernestna de Champourcin (Spain 1905–1999), and Antonia Pozzi (Italy, 1912–1938) from the perspective of current transsecular approaches, cultural studies mysticism research, and feminist literary studies, making original links to (neo-)vitalist philosophy.

This challenging and important study, which examines a range of canonical and less well-known writers, is an innovative reassessment of late Victorian literature in its relation to visionary Romanticism. It examines six late Victorian writers - Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater, Vernon Lee, Eugene Lee-Hamilton, Theodore Watts-Dunton and Thomas Hardy - to reveal their commitment to a Romantic visionary tradition which surfaces towards the end of the nineteenth century in response to the threat of a growing materialism. Offering detailed and imaginative readings of both poetry and prose, Seco

The idea of contagious transmission, either by material particles or by infectious ideas, has played a powerful role in the development of the Western World since antiquity. Yet it acquired quite a precise signature during the process of scientific and cultural differentiation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This volume explores the significance and cultural functions of contagionism in this period, from notions of infectious homosexuality and the concept of social contagion to the political implications of bacteriological fieldwork. The history of the concept 'microbe' in aesthetic modernism is adressed as well as bacteriological metaphors in American literary historiography. Within this broad framework, contagionism as a literary narrative is approached in more focussed contributions: from its emotional impact in literary modernism to the idea of physical or psychic contagion in authors such as H.G. Wells, Kurt Lasswitz, Gustav Meyrinck, Ernst Weiss, Thomas Mann and Max Frisch. This twofold approach of general topics and individual literary case studies produces a deeper understanding of the symbolic implications of contagionism marking the boundaries between sick and healthy, familiar and alien, morally pure and impure.

Algernon CharlesSwinburne (18371909), dramatist, novelist, and critic, was late Victorian England's unofficial Poet Laureate. Swinburne was admired by his contemporaries for his technical brilliance, his facility with classical and medieval forms, and his courage in expressing his sensual, erotic imagination. His first and best-known verse collection, Poems and Ballads (1866), notable for its consummate craftsmanship and provocative subject matter, created an unrivalled sensation. His radical republican views as expressed in his later political collection Songs before Sunrise (1871) reinforced his reputation as a controversial figure. He was immensely important in his own day but, like several of his contemporaries, suffered neglect and misrepresentation during the first half of the twentieth century. Now, however, Swinburne is acknowledged to be one of the most important Victorian poets, the founding figure for British aestheticism, and the dominant influence for many fin-de-siecle and modernist poets. Forging a vital link between French and English literary culture, he was responsible for promoting avant-garde poets such as Gautier and Baudelaire who would have considerable impact on English decadent writers. This collection of eleven new essays offers a thorough revaluation of this fascinating and complex figure. It situates him in the light of current critical work on cosmopolitanism, politics, form, Victorian Hellenism, gender and sexuality, the arts, and aestheticism and its contested relation to literary modernism.

This study traces how an internationalist world literature of the labor movement was represented and put into practice in the Weimar Republic. It contributes to a theory of world literature, reinforces the intersectional category of class for analyzing representations of a split modernity, and opens up new perspectives on the literature of the working class for poetology, literary history, and cultural history.

The cinephobic novelist who complains to Fitzgerald's tycoon that he will never get the hang of scriptwriting wouldn't give a nickel for the movies. Yet never before the appearance of film had human perception been engaged in such an all-encompassing way by a single art form. In this ambitious investigation of a little-studied narrative genre, Gavriel Moses defines and explores "the film novel," a literary text in which cinema provides the thematic, formal, psychological, and philosophical center. Through close readings of works by the major representatives of the genre--Pirandello, Nabokov, Isherwood, West, Fitzgerald, Moravia, Percy, Puig--Moses develops a suggestive theory of novels that use literature to investigate the central role that film has acquired in human experience. These novels, because of their fascination with filmmaker and spectator alike, and because they anticipate current views of the questions of cinema, remain a tangible presence within the repertoire of literary modernism. Offering insightful discussions of Laughter in the Dark, Lancelot, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and other film novels, Moses shows the depth of the exchange between literature and cinema and illustrates the extent to which the way we tell stories with words has been affected by the movies. His book will be of wide interest to literary scholars, film historians, and students of cinema and the novel.
