Abstract

This latest exhibition brings together 14 photographers at the instigation of BOZAR and the photography museums of Antwerp and Charleroi. Together, they will examine the fine line that now separates documentary photography and fine art photography. The fact is that, since the 1980s, photography has been permanently elevated to the rank of art, but has never been so used in the vast stock of photo-journalism. This documentary and social veneer is brought out in art photographs which enhance the supporting document. Belgian photography does not escape this ambiguity between documentary framework and metaphoric and conceptual narration. Beyond the Document offers a unique snapshot, combining, in a single medium, objectivity and subjectivity, fiction and reality, report and concept, document and work of art

Abstract

Since the 1990s, the Contretype Photographic Space has been asking questions about the Brussels cityscape through various initiatives, such as commissioning photographic assignments and the Artists in Residence programme, which began in 1997, accommodates photographers in Brussels and exhibits their work there. Open equally to European and non-European photographers, the programme has two objectives:to provide the artist with time for reflection and to support him/her in the production of photos for an assignment linked to his/her residence that is in keeping with his/her body of work and interests. The specific geographical framework for this creative process is, of course, Brussels. From the meeting of these two pre-requisites, the photographer in residence compiles a record of his/her stay. This record is exhibited to the public and published in a book at the end of the residence period, and forms part of an archive for the future, which, as one residence follows another, gradually creates a portrait of the city. The artists in residence at Contretype are not obliged to take photos of the city, but rather to take photos in the city, as an extension of their personal body of work. Jean-Louis Godefroid (1952-2013), Director of Contretype thinks that “it is just as important to offer personal and poetic views of the city, and to reflect on different ways of presenting them, rather than remaining in a purely documentary framework. The overall concept of the project underlies the choices made by the artists: we want them to think carefully about modern documentary photography which can be a little too theoretical, to offer other views of the landscape. It’s as if we were inviting poets, rather than journalists, to write about the city. It’s about immersing the artists in the landscape and then leaving them the freedom to play with their surroundings.

Abstract

Abstract

Museum to scale 1/7 is an initiative by Ronny Van de Velde which has been developed by the artist Wesley Meuris. In accordance with a firmly established postmodern tradition, the museum is at once subject and object of an intervention that operates as a mise en abîme that is, the representation of an object using the object itself as a frame of reference. Museum to scale features more than a hundred miniature exhibition rooms at a scale of 1:7 that are devoted to Belgian artists and Belgian artistic movements. After a homage to Marcel Duchamp and his Boîte-en-valise, the circuit takes off with Jean-Jacques Grandvilles illustrations to Gullivers travels, the famous novel by Jonathan Swift in which scale assumes an important role. Thematic and historical ensembles devoted to symbolism, surrealism, photography, the Cobra movement, abstract and minimal art lead to a section in which Belgian contemporary artists have each decorated a room in their own original way. Among the participating artists are Jan Fabre, Jan De Cock, Pierre Alechinsky, Koen Van Mechelen, Ann Veronica Janssens, Michel François, and also Angel Vergara, Johan Muyle, Luc Deleu, Luc Tuymans and many more.

A website makes a visit to the exhibition an interactive activity. In the exhibition, the visitor can select his favorite museums by scanning the QR codes on the title tags with a smartphone. This selection is sent to the website Museum to scale and is registered there. The individual viewing behavior is tracked by the platform of the website and thus the visitor becomes curator. He creates his own ideal exhibition.
